Advantages: Great food, great service Disadvantages: It misses out on passing trade
I love dining out with friends and one of our long time favourite places to eat has been the GatehouseHotel on Old Norwich Road in Ipswich. This small hotel is away from the bustle of the main Norwich Road and tucked away down what is now a dead end so it can't attract a passing trade but it is well worth the effort seeking it out. We used to dine there regularly but recently it has undergone a change in ownership, some modernisation and extension to increase the number of available bedrooms and become part of the Best Western Group of hotels so it was with some trepidation that I made a booking for an evening meal as it is always a worry when a favourite dining venue undergoes a number of changes.
Booking for the meal was not a problem, we got a reservation for two for a Saturday evening with no problem so I began to look ...
Advantages: Amazing period features, friendly staff, great food, four-poster bed Disadvantages: Could be expensive, not much parking, small beds
found that the day we wanted to go came at a discount! We ended up paying around £70 for two of us to stay in The Ancient GatehouseHotel which was on the doorstep of Cathedral Green!

But booking was pretty straightforward (its always in their interests to make that easy I guess) and we didn't even need out E-receipt when we turned up at the hotel as they had our booking and were happy to let us in.
Parking
Parking could have been an issue as the Ancient Gatehouse doesn't have any parking spaces of its own. The nearest car parks in town were fairly expensive and almost always full, but we were lucky enough to be ...
Advantages: An interesting insight from two different perspectives Disadvantages: There are no answers
I find a certain fascination in true crime books so a quick glance along my bookshelf will reveal books about the Yorkshire Ripper, Harold Shipman and Fred and Rosemary West so I guess it was inevitable that sooner or later I would buy a book about Steve Wright - the so-called 'Suffolk Strangler'. Perhaps it was even more likely because I also happen to live just outside Ipswich so have a knowledge of many of the areas where he was operating. Add to that an interest in psychology and you can perhaps understand why I bought a copy of Hunting Evil: Inside the Ipswich Serial Murders last week almost as soon as it hit the shelves.
Hunting Evil is written by Sky news journalist Paul Harrison who is claiming to be the 'Journalist who broke the story' - well he might have been to the wider world but, here in Ipswich, I was aware of it ...
