Advantages: Comfortable, historic hotel Disadvantages: Bar shuts too early!
Thanks to the ticket touts (aka parasitic scum), I couldn't get tickets to any of the Manic Street Preachers' London gigs on their recent tour. As the Manics are a band that seem to be constantly on the verge of retirement, you don't like to miss an opportunity to see them live, so I booked the Reading concert.

Over the years, I've decided my least favourite aspect of going to concerts is travelling home afterwards - ever since my sister threw up in the car somewhere in Somerset on the way back from the Newport leg of Radioheard's Big Tent Tour. So I decided to book a hotel, and I decided I wanted a NICE hotel.
The George Hotel is apparently the oldest building in Reading. It's incredibly easy to find, right at the heart of the town centre, and about a ten minute walk from the train station. From the outside, it looks like some horrific mock Tudor nightmare, but you have to let it off because it's actually a Tudor building.
Inside, however, the owners have eschewed the olde-worlde rubbish for a nice understated modern foyer. The people at the reception desk were pretty darn helpful - we'd arrived far too early (for once, the trains were on time! Who'd have thought it?) but they let us check in early, which was great.
Finding our room was a bit of a challenge, the corridors were a bit of a rabbit warren, full of unexpected staircases and things. But the management seemed to be on top of it with plenty of signs to the different room numbers.
We were in a fairly basic double room, looking over the hotel's central courtyard and beer garden area. It was still pretty quiet with the double glazing though. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was lovely with a proper full-size bath with shower attachment.
We were only there for the one night, but we slept well, and didn't have to check out until 11:00am on the Sunday morning, which is nice and civilised. The buffet breakfast was comprehensive, and I stocked up on the full English and polished it off with fruit salad and a yoghurt. The only problem with the breakfast spread was that the hash browns were a bit soggy, and the sausages were pretty bland as well.
Anna and I were also a bit annoyed that the bar shut so early. We're used to boozing up a storm until the small hours after concerts and things, and we didn't have so much as a minibar. In these days of supposedly 24 hour drinking, Reading didn't have a lot to offer apart from a few nightclubs that looked a bit skanky. Just a bit of a reminder that we weren't in SW18 any more, I guess...
Despite these quibbles, I can recommend the George Hotel without any reservations. The staff are helpful, the rooms are clean and comfortable, and the food is great. It's also nice not to be stuck in a chain hotel for once, and the history of the building makes it somewhere a bit special, and not just somewhere to get your head down until the trains start running.
On the advice front, I would recommend booking direct. So-called discount sites were offering me a 'fabulous' deal of seventy quid for the night, but when I phoned the hotel directly, I was offered fifty-five straight away. So now you know where lastminute.com makes its money...
And on a personal note, after I'd booked the hotel I mentioned it to my parents, who met while studying at Reading University a few decades ago. Turns out their first date was in the hotel bar. Aw...
Advantages: Pretty, centre of town location, nice bedrooms Disadvantages: Very, very close to a mainline railway line
From first glance on arrival everything looked good for a relaxing weekend in this town centre 3 star hotel (in Pangbourne - 7 miles from Reading). Car parking on the front was limited but more spaces availablle at the rear of the hotel. We paid £135 for 2 people for 2 nights bed and breakfast (kitkash points special offer) in a standard room.
Small reception area, in need of and in the process of being redecorated, with helpful member of staff. First floor corridors nicely refurbished although the automatic light sensors need adjusting, my wife is 5'5" and wasn't tall enough to be picked up by the sensor and had to make her way down the corridor on her own in the dark. Bedroom niceley furnished, plenty of hanging space and drawers. Bed was low, being a put a way into wall unit affair although comfy enough. Staff brought extra ...
