If you fancy a few days away near the coast in England but want to stay somewhere just that little bit more grown up and luxurious then this could be the place for you. The Grand hotel in Eastbourne is an Agatha Christie type hotel. You draw up on the drive and there is someone there offering to take your bags. When you walk in, you walk into a wonderful high ceilinged cavernous public area where the seating is arranged around fireplaces, paintings adorn walls and flowers decorate tables. The atmosphere created immediately made me feel that I was going to have an enjoyable stay.
On the left is a morning/lounge room where you can sit and have tea and cakes, help yourself to the complimentary fruit and newspapers or just watch the world go by. On the right is a ballroom style dining room. There are lifts up to the bedrooms which are of a good standard and have good proportions. There were complimentary bottles of mineral water alongside the tea/coffee making facilities and our bathroom was kitted out with some really nice shampoo, conditioner and bath gel. This always makes me feel that the hotel is not trying to skimp on the extras and that I am getting what I paid for.
The hotel has the bonus of an indoor swimming pool and an area where you can take spa type treatements. The area is not massive but it is clean and calm. It was the perfect place to wile away time if it is raining (This is England after all !)
Breakfast is served in a room that you could hold a wedding party in. Again there is no skimping on the food served, the linen, plates or cutlery used, or on the service provided.
Lastly I have to mention we had some drinks in the bar. I was worried that the really delicious wine served with a range of complimentary snacks was going to cost us the earth. It did not.
Eastbourne is an old fashioned type of seaside resort and this hotel, on the edge of the town is within walking distance of the candy floss and toffee apples if that is what but is also ideally placed to visit any other part of this picturesque part of the southern coastline. We will visit again.
Advantages: Usually good, high quality travel Disadvantages: apparently not on the Orlando flight
and explained what the previous lady had said but we were directed to the back of the queue. by the time we reached the front the only rooms left available were in Eastbourne over an hours drive away.
Of course we took them and reached Eastbourne at 12.30. We found out the following morning that other people with small children the same age and younger than ours had not been as lucky and had spent the night in the waiting lounge in the airport - Virgin did consent and let them use the shower in their lounge but they weren't allowed to stay the night as children under 12 are not allowed in that particular lounge. In Eastbourne we were allocated the presidential suite in the GrandHotel - absolutely fantastic, had we not had to leave by 5.30 am, the room was lovely and I am sure I will never be able to afford to stay in it again.
