I had a very hectic Christmas last year cooking for the family and generally doing far too much eating and drinking, so when it came to New Years Eve I was worn out, and to be quite honest just could not face another knees up to see the New Year in.
My husband came up with the idea of going for a pint at tea time then back home for a night in front of the television. I agreed with that idea and then he piped up that we would have to go to bed early because we were getting up at six in the morning to drive to Scarborough and staying over night in the grand Hotel.
Scarborough is about three and a half hours drive from where we live so we took a steady pace travelling over the moors keeping away from the motorway. It was great no stress and gorgeous scenery. There was quite a lot of snow on the moors but the roads were clear and all the trees looked as if they had been sprinkled with icing sugar it was just like a typical Christmas card scene.
We stopped for breakfast along the way and finally arrived in Scarborough at about lunch time feeling totally refreshed after the mad week that we had had.
We managed to find a parking space outside the hotel and check in was very quick and easy, we paid £75 for the one night and this included evening meal and breakfast the next morning. The only thing that we were not expecting was a £4.50 charge for parking but never mind it was not worth worrying about.
The main reception area was very regal looking with a huge stair case going up to the second floor I have never seen a staircase like it, and the leather sofas placed throughout the reception gave the whole hotel a welcoming feel.
There are three lifts to access the floors and these moved very slowly compared to other lifts that I have been in but again it did not cause us a problem we were there to unwind after all.
Our room was on the fourth floor and to our delight it was a sea view with a large bed, sofa, television and tea and coffee making facilities.
The bathroom was large with a Jacuzzi bath in and a nice touch I thought was the bottles of lotions and potions provided they certainly hadn’t scrimped with these.
Now I come to the comical part of this tale.....I just had to try this Jacuzzi bath so I filled it up with piping hot water and poured a liberal amount of bubble bath in, as I said the management had not been stingy with the stuff. I got into the bath and then turned it on, wow was it powerful especially on full blast, I tried the low setting but that was a wee bit tame for me.......
Yes I bet you have guessed by now....There was bubbles every where I couldn’t see a thing and had to fight my way out of the foam to find a towel.
After cleaning up the bathroom and putting up with my husbands rips of laughter we decided to take a walk on the promenade, we were not expecting much to be open with it being New Years Day but there were people every where I was surprised. We bought a bag of chips to eat as you do when you go to the sea side and just wandered it was great.
Before we returned to the hotel we decided to have a dabble in one of the amusement arcades and I won £65 on a fruit machine after three goes so we scooped up the money much to the disgust of the lady on the next machine, and we took a walk back to the hotel.
This hotel is actually on a cliff top and walking down to the promenade earlier I didn’t realise how much lower the prom was to the hotel. Never mind I remembered that there was an escalator to take you back up to the hotel so we walked right to the end of the pier and alas it was not working that day with it being a bank holiday. It was a painful climb up a load of steps and I was starting to feel really cold, finally at the top we staggered into the hotel and straight to the bar for a brandy.
The evening meal was served from 5.30 to eight o’clock so we decided to go down at half seven. The restaurant was a huge room and I liked the way the tables were placed there was plenty of room; I just hate a restaurant that packs people in like cattle.
The buffet style meal was great, there was plenty of choice from fish to three sorts of meat, and all the vegetables were fresh. Everything was piping hot and I can honestly say we both thought it was excellent right down to the efficiency of the staff. This hotel has definitely got its catering right.
Our room was very comfortable and after a good relaxing sleep we decided to try the delights of the restaurant again for our breakfast. Again it was spot on we were brought our pot of coffee within seconds of sitting down and we enjoyed a full English with toast and marmalade. I did have a good look at what was on offer, cold meats, cheese etc , fresh fruit, cereals and yoghurts there was something to suit everybody’s taste and it was all displayed nicely.
After we checked out and got in the car we both said at the same time ‘Now that’s a hotel that I would stay in again.’ So if you are ever in Scarborough do give this place a try it is excellent value for money.
I booked the hotel as a last minute bank holiday getaway. I read some reviews on another site (only once I had booked - oops!), but it was only for a night. I booked a Premier room (worth the extra - see points below).
Staff:
Reception staff were not very knowledgable and we got the same 'I don't really know' response from the same girl more than 10 times in 2 minutes! Restaurant staff were hit-and-miss. I asked about the Premier carvery and was ... ...not know how to open the door on the wheelchair ramp - or even if it was available (I had a look myself as there were infirm guests looking to use it - simple push bar!)
Rooms:
Wait for it.......Our room was absolutely superb - 2 singles and a double, room for a travel-cot, seating area, twin balcony, sea view - downside of a Premier room though is no shower cubicle.
On checking out of the hotel I like to have a quick nosey in rooms where the ...

Advantages: Central for location Disadvantages: Where do I start!
...honest, reliable, insider's review of the Grand Hotel, Scarborough. "The Grand" is now, and has been, part of the Britannia group for the past few years. With the promise of a 7 million pound refurbishment program in place, I took the position of Food Services Manager, summer of 2005. I had recently moved to the area and knew little about The Hotels reputation….only through research did I find the marvellous history of the building itself. Built ... ...The Grand Hotel boasts superb architecture with the design rumoured to be based on the theme of time. Four towers represent the seasons. 12 floors represent the months. 52 chimneys represent the weeks. Originally 365 bedrooms to represent the days of the year. For entertainment, the Cabaret Ballroom, Palm Court Ballroom and Empress Suite offer regular entertainment. If a Christmas party or Cabaret night is what you after then the entertainment staff ...

Grand Not So Review ofThe Grand Hotel, Scarboroughby
MarkHodgkins
Advantages: None Disadvantages: Come away feeling very ill
The Grand Hotel built in the late 1800s boosted to be the biggest man built building in Europe at that time. Constructed over 12 floors to represent 12 months of the year 52 chimneys, 365 rooms and 4 towers to mark the seasons of the year. In seeing the building and with great imagination you can see how fine and grand it was at that day of is peak. With great views from one side of the hotel overlooking the beach and harbour. 3 fine Ballrooms, 2 ... ...balcony that looks down over the Grand Lounge.
A hotel that's was at its finest in its day and that has been allowed to decay over the years with little money ploughed in and poorly maintained has become the largest free standing heap of rubble in Europe that should have been closed down some time ago.
I began working for Butlins at the Grand Hotel in Scarborough in 1995 in the coffee shop which was converted into a Premier Restaurant which I believe ...

Advantages: Very close to the town and attractions. Disadvantages: The Grand?? Should be called The Shabby.
On the 1st of July this year (2006) my partner and I stopped at The Grand Hotel, Scarborough in room 402, thankfully for only one night! On first impressions (exterior) the hotel looks great, unfortunately, on entering the very small (double??!) room, these thoughts soon ended. The room was terrible, shabby, dirty and had a used condom floating in the toilet (should have checked out straight away!). I immediately reported the floating item to the ... ...apologetic and assured us the condom would be dealt with straight away. On returning to the room two hours later, the condom was still there! Thankfully, on returning a further few hours later it had been removed.
The furnishings in the room are cheap and tacky, the bottom of the bed was tatty and fraid, the shelf in the bathroom was hanging off the wall, a hole in the bathroom door, used soap in the soap dish and a semi used bottle of hotel shampoo. ...

Never Again Review ofThe Grand Hotel, Scarboroughby
RichPrice
Advantages: It looks nice Disadvantages: Incredibly Shabby
I had the misfortune to be stuck in Scarborough and needed a hotel. The Grand looked promising (appearances can be deceptive). certainly it charges "grand" prices. I paid what I would expect to pay for an average 3* hotel. I made the mistake of booking one night B&B
The place was almost full,. it transpired with a country and western convention. The room, a twin, was cramped. It was allegedly ensuite (call the toilet and shower a broom cupboard). ... ...it is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in.
The hotel appears to cater for two separate "classes" which have different dining rooms and different quality of accomodation. I tried breakfast, a big queue to get into the "restaurant" (bizarre) then breakfast a rasher of bacon, a spoon of congealed baked beans...need I go on...the staff were not what I would call outstanding. The only thing that they were good at was taking my credit card when I checked ...

Advantages: Lots of Character Disadvantages: No Facilities
...Skegness unfortunately has a shortage of good hotels. The Vine is probably the best in the area.
I have stayed there on four or fiver separate occasions. Part of the Best Western Chain of independent hotels, the hotel regularly participates in Best Western special offers (3 nights for 2 etc).
The rooms are clean and well decorated with good quality funishings and nice ensuite bath rooms. The Rooms are light and airy. Not the cheapest place to stay (but cheaper than certain other hotels such as the grandscarborough...) but it is warm and comfortable. The Staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful. The Hotel has a well stocked bar with a Restaurant and also serves bar meals.
I haven't eaten dinner in the Restaurant so cannot comment on the food the menu looks moderately good. I have eaten Breakfast which is well cooked local...

Advantages: Something for everyone Disadvantages: The weather can be very bracing!
...Scarborough is a resort, spa and fishing town with twin bays connected by a coast road, which winds its way around the foot of the cliff on the top of which stands Scarborough Castle.
The south part of the town is centred on the harbour and is the more commercialised of the two parts. The harbour itself is well used by both fishing vessels and pleasure craft. There are lots of slot machine arcades, cafes and pubs all along the harbour side, making for a busy atmosphere in the summer. At the far south of this part of the town is the GrandHotel standing majestically on the cliff top and the main theatre of Scarborough. The shopping area is situated behind the GrandHotel and is a good mix of High Street favourites and seaside gift shops.
The north part of the town is altogether quieter being centred on a lovely park with landscaped...

Advantages: Great English holiday, Plenty to do Disadvantages: none
...am to 6pm daily during the summer.
Peasholm Park – This has boats, canoes, motor launch trips, mini golf, putting, and a café. There is also a water ski circus show, which is an event not to be missed.
Miniature Railway – This runs to and from the sea life centre in North bay.
There are also amusements (lots of them), museums & a gallery, and a Spa Theatre.
In Scarborough are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants to choose from, serving the traditional seaside food to the more exotic.
Accommodation is plentiful, ranging from bed & breakfasts to places like the GrandHotel, which is situated on the cliff top.
I would recommend Scarborough to all types of holiday maker....
