On the 1st of July this year (2006) my partner and I stopped at The Grand Hotel, Scarborough in room 402, thankfully for only one night! On first impressions (exterior) the hotel looks great, unfortunately, on entering the very small (double??!) room, these thoughts soon ended. The room was terrible, shabby, dirty and had a used condom floating in the toilet (should have checked out straight away!). I immediately reported the floating item to the front desk (no phone in room), the receptionist was very apologetic and assured us the condom would be dealt with straight away. On returning to the room two hours later, the condom was still there! Thankfully, on returning a further few hours later it had been removed. The furnishings in the room are cheap and tacky, the bottom of the bed was tatty and fraid, the shelf in the bathroom was hanging off the wall, a hole in the bathroom door, used soap in the soap dish and a semi used bottle of hotel shampoo. The room was also very noisy because of the seagulls nesting in the alcoves outside the very small window. I paid £65 for the night room only, supposedly a huge saving for booking online, normal price now £115, if I'd paid that amount my girlfriend and I would have been in tears. That said, £65 was too expensive for such a room! If the rest of the rooms are in this dire state, the complaints manager (which they don't appear to have) is not paid enough. After this, didn't try the food, or the entertainment. I've never used the Britannia group before, and now, sadly, shall never be using them again. I've attempted to contact the hotel and the group via email, with no joy.
