The Grand Hotel built in the late 1800s boosted to be the biggest man built building in Europe at that time. Constructed over 12 floors to represent 12 months of the year 52 chimneys, 365 rooms and 4 towers to mark the seasons of the year. In seeing the building and with great imagination you can see how fine and grand it was at that day of is peak. With great views from one side of the hotel overlooking the beach and harbour. 3 fine Ballrooms, 2 Restaurants, and a Grand Staircase guiding you up on to a balcony that looks down over the Grand Lounge. A hotel that's was at its finest in its day and that has been allowed to decay over the years with little money ploughed in and poorly maintained has become the largest free standing heap of rubble in Europe that should have been closed down some time ago.
I began working for Butlins at the Grand Hotel in Scarborough in 1995 in the coffee shop which was converted into a Premier Restaurant which I believe it still is. I also worked in the Harbour Lights restaurant, bars as well as helping in general front of house.
The building itself is in poor condition with cracked walls, dampness in guest rooms, chipped paint, creaking floorboards, dirty bathrooms, filthy kitchens, low quality food & drinks, untrained staff with no incentive for staff to progress, untrained management, poor variety of entertainment and much more.
The restaurant that serves processed food and in my day was served in the kitchen on plates by hand. In fact when food was being served on customer plates quite often chefs would be seen to be eating in between. Dropped food would also be served especially if it was a large amount as this would cause to much disruption to normal service in the restaurant. If you did not finish your food then the pot wash staff where in for a treat as i paid witness to them demolishing leftovers of peoples plate. The tiles in the kitchen played with grease and dirt collecting in the corners. With uncleaned drains in the floor of the kitchen given of smells to make you sick. The cleanliness of the rest of the hotel was much the same as the kitchen with worn carpets and high level dust and grime sticking to the walls. One person was heard complaining about getting into a bed and finding pants that had been left between the bed sheets from the last guest in the room. The bed had not been changed due to staff shortages and staff under pressure to clean up to 60 rooms each per day. Take my advice, do not visit this hotel the hotel has closed 6 times in the last 5 years with sickness, and still with the specialist companies going in cleaning the place for re-opening the bug comes back to haunt.
