Der der, der der der der der, der der, der der der derrrrrr Yup you guessed it, that was the theme to the Great Escape…..!!!!! That was what was going through my mind anyway when I went to visit the site of the Great Escape in West Sussex.
~~What is it? An old movie or something?~~ Actually far from sitting on a sofa, The Great Escape is an amazing Woodland Challenge Course (huge assault course to you and me) with lots of exciting rope elements like a zip wire - where you are on a harness and whoosh down a wire rope at massive speed. This one happens to be 60m long. Burma bridge where you are high up balancing on a wire and holding on to two either side of you (wibble wobble!) and many other things including a tunnel that you and a group of people have to scramble through…well it would be rude not to being The Great Escape and all!!!!
~~Is it safe?~~ 100%, all the staff are fully trained and qualified, you are in a harness for any high ropes elements.
~~What is the location like~~ It is absolutely beautiful - but then I visited on an amazing summers day, all the main activities are situated outdoors, the assault course is based in woodland on a private estate, while there I saw deer, squirrels, a fox and little bunnies…ahhhhh. That's when I wasn't screaming my head off down the zip wire anyway!!!! If it's raining you take your waterproofs and have a thoroughly muddy time!!!! Seriously they also do management training and have an indoor barn if there is teambuilding. The Great Escape is based in West Hoathly which is close to Crawley, West Sussex. (about 15 miles from Brighton)
~~Do you need to be fit?~~ No not at all, the Manager had said to us prior to booking, "as long as you can do a mile walk or so you'll be fine" and she was right. Having given birth to Ollie 6 months ago (6 months? Where did that go?!!!!) anyway back on track, I was a little worried about this, it was fine, the only really stamina was in clambering over some of the assault course - it was not the "army style" that I imagined at all and more to do with balance.
~~What about heights?~~ I'll be honest with you, if you do not like heights, this will probably scare the living daylights out of you, the highest point I think is the top of the zip wire, although the Instructor did let one of the girls opt out of some of the high bits, but then she had to walk quite a way to get around to the next bit as one bit sort of starts where the other one finishes if you seen what I mean?!
~~All in all?~~ I had an amazing time, I did not break a nail but I did get a bit muddy. We all had a right good laugh (at ourselves and each other!) and the Instructors were brilliant. I would thoroughly recommend it for a day out. The price can vary from £30 upwards, they bespoke their courses to what you want which is refreshing. It can be a lot more expensive if you want lots of options. Generally it is for group bookings, corporate, stag, hen, birthday parties that sort of thing, although in the summer they offer ½ days where you can book for smaller numbers.
