When the Lake District was finally open after the foot and mouth situation, we decided to give it a first visit.
Where we went:
Amberside town was rather crowded but still okay. We spent 5 days there but it rained for 4 days while we were there. Though the weather was bad, the beautiful lakes and hills sort of made up for it.
Where we camped:
Where you camp depends on which hill range you are trekking...Being ... ...in lake district. Hence, the nearest campsite would be the Great Langdale campsite managed by the National Trust, which is abt 10 miles from Amberside.

Where we went: Amberside town was rather crowded but still okay. We spent 5 days there but it rained for 4 days while we were there. Though the weather was bad, the beautiful lakes and hills sort of made up for it.
Where we camped: Where you camp depends on which hill range you are trekking...Being adventurous we tried to trek up Scafell Pike on our second day in lake district. Hence, the nearest campsite would be the Great Langdale campsite managed by the National Trust, which is abt 10 miles from Amberside.
The campsite has very good facilites. The showers are very powerful and have hot and cold water with adjustable temperatures. It also provides 3-pt socket for charging your electronic devices (mainly hair dryer use) in the toilets. What amazed me was that there is a drying room available for anyone who wants to dry their wet socks (watever) when the weather gets bad. There are separate rooms for washing your dishes and your laundry, with washing machine and tumble dryers.
The side backs abt this campsite are that the pitching area is quite rocky...Do check the area before you start pitching, don't waste your effort unncessarily. And the camp charges are quite steep, based on per person rather than per tent. £4 per person and £2 per car. And you may not get to pitch your tent next to your car...a bit of walking to do, difficult at night tough.
The campsite is just next to Cumbria Way which leads to the Scafell Range of hills, hence you can trek along Cumbria Way to scale up Harrison Stickle, High Raise which are nearly hills.
Overall, the experience of trekking in the Lake District has been good despite the poor weather.

The GreatLangdalecampsite as the name suggests is in the GreatLangdale area where the Langdale Pikes lies in the LakeDistrict. It is abt 10miles drive from the Amberside town.
Pros:
The campsite is near to the Scafell range of hills, with Harrison Stickle and Langdale Pikes along Cumbria way if you fancy any trekking up the hills and fellwalking.
Being managed by the National Trust, the campsite provides very good facilities. The showers are powerful with hot and cold water and you can adjust the temperatures of the water. And this campsite is one of the fews which provides 3-point sockets for power supply in the toilets. You can use it to charge your electronic appliances and also use your hair dryer..
There are also drying rooms available for you to dry your shoes, jackets whatever if they get damped. And noise level ...
