It?s absolutely amazing to think that these people moved all these stones rocks and boulders to make this great wall on the top of the mountains. Many parts of the wall are unsafe and in a state of disrepair due to wear and tear caused by weather and also local people stealing the stones to build their own houses. The part of the wall we visited is one of the most visited parts of the Great Wall at Badaling which is only about 45 miles from Beijing. Here the wall has been repaired and you are able to walk up either side. There is a small charge of about 45 Yuan which is just under a pound. Great Wall of China, enduring monument

Advantages: Ancient, magnificent, indeed a Great Wall of China
Disadvantages: Sometimes ghastly winds to cut through you and knock you off your feet

put you off. Walking on the Great Wall of China is a highlight of my travels and one I recommend to everyone who plans a visit to that ancient and interesting country. I think it is best to book a day trip before you leave your home country as the language, when trying to book things, and the lack of tourism savvy is a bit of a barrier. Our trip was in a mini bus and the escort was really informative and took us to the Ming Tombs, a cloissione (spelling?) factory and lunch, where I had my first taste of exceedingly more-ish Chinese beer, on our way to the wall. If you do hold a Great Wall of China day-trip booking it's odds on that the tour van will pick you up from your hotel which I found most helpful in Beijing but as they prepare for the Olympics it may well be that transport and getting around the city is easier now. A Wall of a Time

Advantages: Breathtaking scenery, great hiking experience, unforgettable!
Disadvantages: Your legs will hurt

First of all and before I get to my review, I would like to quote one person whom I met on my travels. He said: ?It?s just a wall, man!? And frankly, it annoyed me! I just wanted to hit that person. (I didn?t, as I am a very loving person. But pardon me for my bluntness and simplicity; The Great Wall does exactly what it says on the tin! Yes it IS a wall! But the word great is there for a reason.) If you approach this unique sight on a similar level as this traveller, you will not enjoy the experience and subsequently you will probably not enjoy my reviewing a wall.
