What do you expect from a city? This questions has to be clarified before you are travelling to The Hague.
The Hague has nothing to do with the tourist crowded Amsterdam and is not that sterile and new-styled Rotterdam. No, The Hague is situated between the two largest cities of the Netherlands (but closer to Rotterdam) and is much more silent and cosy. It is a combination of the restorated old-fashioned houses of the golden 17th century and new buildings and shops of a boomtown. It's the seat of the parliament and home of the Dutch Queen (Beatrix). The Hague and the area arround is one of the favorite living place of the richer Dutch people. It is close to the beach (the name of the beach is Scheveningen by the way) which is pretty nice. The only disadvantage of Scheveningen: It is crowded with a lot of tourists during the summer. For tourist there is not the wide range of sighseeing highlights, but don't forget that you are situated in the middle between two interesting cities. Futhermore there is a pretty shopping area in the area of the parliament, where you find the same stuff like in Rotterdam or Amsterdam.
It takes about 45 min to AMS central station and about 25 minutes to Rotterdam CS from The Hague CS. It means if you are for one week in the Netherland for vacation it makes sense not to go to Amsterdam or Rotterdam but take favour of The Hague where you can start your several sightseeing tours. Regarding a hotel I can recommend the Sofitel, which is very very close (about 50 metres) to the central station (about 250 NLG a night) or the famous Parkhotel (about 250 NLG a night) which is located at the beach area of Scheveningen and is by far the largest hotel there (it's very close to the casino). You can take the bus or the tram from central station to Scheveningen (it's about 20 minutes).
But ask yourself whether this is what you expect from a city!

I hope the waves are more balanced now. Outsider: The pressure of the moralizer was unfortunately too high. I couldn't resist because I' ve learned that my original report with one or two unapprobiate adjectives influences the kids negatively. Before they are not allowed to use the internet anymore I prefer to change my report slightly.
By the way: I'm on the way to Canossa now - therefor any comments can be requested by me only if I'm back again in about 2 weeks
See you
