Advantages: Cheap Beer, location. Disadvantages: Lack of seating
OK, this is the second in a series of my favourite pubs in York. The Hansom Cab is one of the favourites because its a bit different.
The Cab is located in York City Centre. If you are on Parliament Street, aim for the Disney Store (near HSBC and the fountain). If you head west from the Disney Store, towards Coney Street, the Hansom Cab is on your left. Its a pretty small opening, so look carefully. By the way, if you reach Coffee ... ...enough direction.
The primary benefit of the Cab is the beer. For bitter drinkers, like me, you can get a pint of the local bitter, Sam Smith's. For £1.30. Thats as cheap as it gets in York. Its a bit rough, but excellent for the money. But thats not it. If anyone reading this has been to Austria, you may have tried Weissbier - its a white wheat beer. Its kind of fizzy and has an cidery tinge to it. Its seriously nice. The Cab has ... more
OK, this is the second in a series of my favourite pubs in York.
By the way, if you reach Coffee Republic you came too far. Its next the the Nut Store. Anyway, thats enough direction.
The Cab has two on the menu, at £1.85 per pint. Not bad at all! Basically, these are the only two beers I've tried in there, and its all I needed to. Excellent beer. A friend told me you can get organic beer in there as well......sounds minging, but you never know!
The Cab does have a lack of seating. If its not busy, there are a few high-backed red leather chairs, old stylee, with stools (or footrests) next to them. These are possibly the best chairs I have ever sat in. Seriously. They compete with those leather sofas in the SLug and Lettuce. Otherwise, there are a few booths that seat around 10 people, and at the back there are barstools around the edge, and lower tables in the middle. You generally always get a seat, but it might not be a good one.
And....the ultimate instrument for a good pub....... The Weakest Link machine! However, its at the abnormally high price of £1 per play. This is why you should go to The Old White Swan or the Bay Horse (both reviewed or soon to be reviewed), or the underwater King's Arms in York where its 50p per play. The Cab also has a reasonably good juke box.
Furthermore, the Hansom cab has reasonably un-peaky toilets. Clean but small. Thats fine by me.
Food is served at a reasonable price considering this pub is smack bang in the centre of York. Sandwiches and Yorkshires - standard York Pub fare.
All in all, the Hansom Cab is a great pub for about 7 or 8pm on a night out. You can get in 3 pints of Sam's and a go on the Weakest Link for under £5, possibly sit in an incredibly comfortable seat. Its also right in the centre of town, handy for the classy bars or the Gallery, and its right by the bank. Not bad!
Advantages: Cheap beer, especially with studie discount! Disadvantages: Not very comfortable
, and the whole lot is served in a big four pint jug. Thats £5.73 for bitter (Worthingtons) or about £6.20 for lager (Carling). Not bad. However, you have to pay a £2 deposit for the jug, which is returned if you don't break it. You can always ask for the 4 pints, in glasses though (if you're a piker)Also, its 2 for the price of 1 for some alcopops, and a couple of bottled beers. Furthermore, if you take your NUS card, you can get student discount - 50p of every pint (not for the 4 pint jug though!). It's really good value. Other beers on the bar are Smith Extra Smooth, Guinness, Carling, Carling Premier, and Worthington's, plus a full range of bottles. All all standard prices.
Basically, beer price is the only real criteria for our choice of pub. That's why we go to the HansomCab. The Northern Wall is a bit of a let down in other departments ...
Advantages: Sitting outside Disadvantages: No really good beer deals
pleasant, and its basically the only reason we go there.
Also, its right across the street from Varsity, where you can get flyers for the Gallery. (One of York's pants nightclubs. Actually, I can't really say that, because I always have a good laugh there.)
Furthermore, Judges has recently been refurbished inside. Now its a bit nicer! They knocked up a few extra places to park your pint, basically, and done up the toilets. To be fair though, the toilets are absolutely excellent compared with the Northern Wall (see my review) and the HansomCab (see my review).
So. To get to Judges from my starting point for all directions - the Fountain, in Parliament Street. Head north, towards Browns. Head down the street, apssing Borders on your right, and you'll come to a square. Head across it, aiming for the Post Office. Then, continue north ...
Advantages: One of the nicest pibs in York, live music, Millionaire, massive toilets Disadvantages: A little bit out of the way
, and turn left at Woolworth's. Walk uphill, turn right at the fork, and enter the HansomCab.
6. The HansomCab (8:45pm) - Depending on your blood-alcohol levels, drink as much as you need here. £1.30 per pint of Sam Smith's (see review)!! Play on the Weakest Link until you have lost as much as you can. Exit to the left, turn left at Woolworths, pass GAME, cross the main road, continuing south. Take the second downhill road left to The Grapes.
7. The Grapes (9:45pm) - If you can still control your body, have a drink of your choice here. I recommend alcopops as you will almost certainly need energy. Remember to ask for flyers to the Gallery for £3.50 entry if you are behind schedule. Play table football upstairs (if you can get up them). Exit to the right, up the hill, and turn right on the main road. Enter the Gallery.
8. The Gallery (before ...
