OK, this is the second in a series of my favourite pubs in York. The Hansom Cab is one of the favourites because its a bit different.
The Cab is located in York City Centre. If you are on Parliament Street, aim for the Disney Store (near HSBC and the fountain). If you head west from the Disney Store, towards Coney Street, the Hansom Cab is on your left. Its a pretty small opening, so look carefully. By the way, if you reach Coffee Republic you came too far. Its next the the Nut Store. Anyway, thats enough direction.
The primary benefit of the Cab is the beer. For bitter drinkers, like me, you can get a pint of the local bitter, Sam Smith's. For £1.30. Thats as cheap as it gets in York. Its a bit rough, but excellent for the money. But thats not it. If anyone reading this has been to Austria, you may have tried Weissbier - its a white wheat beer. Its kind of fizzy and has an cidery tinge to it. Its seriously nice. The Cab has two on the menu, at £1.85 per pint. Not bad at all! Basically, these are the only two beers I've tried in there, and its all I needed to. Excellent beer. A friend told me you can get organic beer in there as well......sounds minging, but you never know!
The Cab does have a lack of seating. If its not busy, there are a few high-backed red leather chairs, old stylee, with stools (or footrests) next to them. These are possibly the best chairs I have ever sat in. Seriously. They compete with those leather sofas in the SLug and Lettuce. Otherwise, there are a few booths that seat around 10 people, and at the back there are barstools around the edge, and lower tables in the middle. You generally always get a seat, but it might not be a good one.
And....the ultimate instrument for a good pub....... The Weakest Link machine! However, its at the abnormally high price of £1 per play. This is why you should go to The Old White Swan or the Bay Horse (both reviewed or soon to be reviewed), or the underwater King's Arms in York where its 50p per play. The Cab also has a reasonably good juke box.
Furthermore, the Hansom cab has reasonably un-peaky toilets. Clean but small. Thats fine by me.
Food is served at a reasonable price considering this pub is smack bang in the centre of York. Sandwiches and Yorkshires - standard York Pub fare.
All in all, the Hansom Cab is a great pub for about 7 or 8pm on a night out. You can get in 3 pints of Sam's and a go on the Weakest Link for under £5, possibly sit in an incredibly comfortable seat. Its also right in the centre of town, handy for the classy bars or the Gallery, and its right by the bank. Not bad!

Sounds like you've found a decent place there. Decent beer, good prices AND A weakest link machine. All it needs now is a Barmaid with big....'personality'... and you've got it all.
