If you're ever travelling through Devon and Cornwall via Tavistock on a cold tiring journey and fancy a meal, drop into the Harvest Home for a warm welcome. If you head out of Tavistock on the A390 and follow the winding roads you'll come to a fork in the road signposted for Morwellham Quay where the Harvest Home greets you on the left.
We've stopped here several times as there aren't many other pubs on route. Luckily they do a good range of pub grub and stock real ales for those of you who like a sample the lesser known pints. It isn't open on Tuesdays but for the rest of the week food is served from 12-2.30, then from 7-9pm. Run by Alistair and Elizabeth, the pub, which is a Free House has a friendly atmosphere without the predictable grind of the endless supply of pub chains we are so used to.
They take all major credit cards and if you're ordering food you can in most instances set up a tab. Most of the main courses cost between £5 and £6. The menu is large ad contains all the usual pub favourites such as steaks, pies, curries, lasagne and so on. If that isn't enough of a choice, be sure to check out the blackboard which faces you as you walk through the door. There are usually another 6 or 7 options for main courses there too. On Sundays they currently do a roast dinner for £4.95. For vegetarians the options are quite standard - Pasta, pizza, stroganoff and often further options on the blackboard. There is always the option of having salad, soups and jacket potatoes.
A for desserts, again the choices are good. For £2.50 you can have a posh Scholler dessert which is a seperate menu with small rich puddings on offer. Alternatively there is apple pie, gateaux and other favourites on the blackboard. If you fancy a coffee to follow, the pub has a range of coffees in a menu you can find at your table.
There is a no smoking area, a family room and a beer garden giving you plenty of choice - although on a winter evening we were happy enough in the bar! The decor is quite touristy and 'country' style with rustic furniture. The pub seems well air conditioned and on a Sunday night had a few locals in but wasn't crowded or stuffy. It's handy to note that if you are travelling and you need to use a phone, the pub has a pay phone at the bar. The landlord also keeps a few guide books if you're looking for ideas. You can also find these at the bar. It strike me as the kind of place that would get pretty busy in the summer, indeed it says on the menu that as all meals are cooked to order there can be a delay during busy periods in having your food served.
I ordered a Soup of the Day - which was Vegetable, followed by the lasagne. The soup arrived with my choice of sliced brown bread. It was obviously home made and reminded me of the sorts of soups I've been making this winter. It was lovely to have something so nutritious in a pub. The bread was really fresh and warm too. The lasagne was served with a whole small white baguette of Garlic Bread. It was served in a shallow ceramic dish and smelt really good and garlicy! The food was hot throughout and tasted as good as any other lasagne I'd had in other pubs and was a welcome treat after a hard day sat in the car! Very pleasant.
The food is prepared with a lot more home made individuality than Wetherspoon's (Yawn!!) and offer simple decent meals with good sized portions for the price. They also avoid that annoying 'Hungry Horse' habit of giving you great piles of lardy food you can't possibly finish or digest!
