My husband and I visited torquay in May 2004 as an anniversary treat from my husbands parents. Unfortunately the Hotel we stayed at left a lot to be desired (see A Weekend at Fawlty Towers!) but we happened to find The Hole in the Wall on our first night there.

The Hole in the Wall is the oldest pub in Torquay, established in about 15??. We came upon it by accident after strolling around Torquay. It was up a tiny side street almost in the main town centre. It looked quaint from outside so as we were looking for a place to dine out we thought we'd give it a try.

Immediately when approaching the bar we were greeted by a member of staff who said," Evening folks, be with you in a minute". This amazed us as the bar was extremely busy and we couldn't believe he'd even seen us walk in. We were then served by another member of staff who was equally as pleasant. We asked if she knew how busy the restaurant was, she replied that she would go and check for us. On returning she told us that there were tables available and should we wish to dine then she would take us through.

We proceeded to go through to the restaurant where, yet again we were met by extremely friendly and helpful staff. The food took a bit of a while to arrive but this didn't matter to us as we were enjoying the surroundings. And when it did arrive, well, it was absolutely fantastic! One of the nicest meals I've eaten in a very long time. The menu was A la carte so as you can imagine the prices were a little higher than bar meals!! I think we paid about £11.95 for steak, but on the first night my husband had the rack of lamb which was £17.95. Desserts were delicious. A fantastic selection of fine icecreams but I have to say I had the Chocolate Cheesecake both nights, I just couldn't resist it!!

After our meal we returned to the bar area where we found even the locals were chatty and friendly.

We enjoyed our evening soooo much at The Hole in the Wall that we didn't waste time looking for another venue for our second night we visited there again! And just as before, staff were friendly, atmosphere was pleasant and food was delicious.

If you're in Torquay I would highly recommend a visit to The Hole in the Wall. I can guarantee it will be a memorable experience.
