Although we like to travel to visit interesting and new pubs it is often nice to pop to the pub around the corner! It is good to have a place nearby that you can nip to without worrying about taxis, buses or having to trek miles for a beer and some food. We have a pub like that just a couple of streets away; a pub that has become our local and a bit of a home from home. This little pub is The Industry!

~~~WHERE IS IT?
The Industry can be found on Queens Street - more or less opposite the shops on Newbold Road (the end near to the centre of Chesterfield). It is about five minutes walk from the town centre and even less from my house, so really does constitute my local pub. It is just off the main road and has houses and shops nearby, along with the amenities of the centre of town.
~~~THE OUTSIDE.

The pub is set back from the street and is a rather nice looking brick building. There are a couple of hanging baskets on the frontage - these are always nicely planted up in the summer months and look very attractive. There isn't a garden, but there is a hard-standing area to the front which serves as a seating area in better weather - they put a couple of wooden picnic style tables out and there is a wall that is suitable for sitting on too. To the rear of the building there is a decent sized car park.

~~~INSIDE.
As you enter the front door you will find the ladies and gents toilets on the left. Directly ahead of you is a door to the smaller room, which also serves as a non-smoking room and restaurant area - this is on curry nights and Sunday lunches; for the rest of the time this is just an additional bar and seating area. This room has a few tables, some comfy seats and a "living flame" gas fire; the main bar also extends into this room so you can see through to the main room and also get a drink.
The door to the right (as you enter the front door of the pub) leads through to the main bar. This is a comfortable large room, with lots of seating and a lovely coal fire. The bar runs along the length of the room and the décor makes to room seem light, airy and spacious.
~~~THE DRINKS.

Of course we are usually there to sample the selection of Real Ales served. Since we have been going there they have installed an extra hand-pump, so now we have a choice of three ever changing Real ales. These are generally priced at £2.30 - £2.40 if the beer is strong! The beer range often includes one or two from local breweries, usually supplemented by a standard beer, such as London Pride or Bombardier.

For those who want to sample a locally produced beer the local choice comes from breweries such as Spire, Townes, Springhead and Thornbridge. We are fortunate to live so close to one of the only regular local stockists of Spire Brewery beers - we pop in to see what they have and are often treated to a Land of Hop & Glory or a Sgt. Pepper Stout!

As well as the Real Ales the Industry also stock a good range of spirits, soft drinks, lagers and wines. These are all competitively priced, but are seldom drunk by any of us!

~~~THE FOOD.
Although primarily a pub, the Industry also does excellent pub food. Sunday lunches are really good - a choice of meats, veg, Yorkshire puds, etc - and you can either just have the main course, or go for starter and sweet. My mum and dad love it because there is also a reduced price for pensioners!
During the week there is a choice of menu for lunchtime and early evening meals - my particular favourite are Stewart's (the landlords) special pies. For £5.25 you get a huge homemade pie with veg and chips or potatoes - I usually go for the chicken and egg pie; chicken in a leek and cream sauce, with a hard boiled egg in the middle, but all the pies are interesting and freshly made (the pasta and fish pie and the spiced lamb pie are also my pies of choice!).
The rest of the menu is equally hearty and very reasonably priced. We also keep a look out for the "Special" food promotions - the Curry Nights are well worth a visit and this February we have been treated to Stewart's Casserole Special; a bowl of casserole and a pint for a fiver!
~~~THE ATMOSPHERE.

Pauline and Stewart have been licensees of the Industry since May 2005. They have been in the trade for a few years; prior to this Stewart had been in the army for 22 years. The pub has grown in popularity and quality since they took over and is now a thriving community pub. Every Wednesday they have a general knowledge quiz that seems to attract a wide range of people - it's one of those Bingo style quizzes, so it doesn't matter if you aren't as good because the answer order is drawn at random.

This means the same people don't always win and this encourages folk to come along week after week without becoming disheartened at not winning. They also hold an acoustic jam night every Thursday - musicians and singers just come along and everyone sings or plays together. It's an excellent night with a friendly atmosphere.

Even when there isn't an event the pub attracts a good client mix, there's always chat and a good banter between the drinkers and the staff. We call in on a regular basis with different people and always receive a warm welcome. We have often commented on how they remember the faces of people who come in and always take the time to chat and make them feel welcome.

I feel lucky to have a pub like the Industry just around the corner! Good beer, good conversation, good food and a good atmosphere! A pub to bring your family and friends and be sure of a good night out!

If you pop in you will maybe even find us propping up the bar…..mine's a pint of Nocturne Porter if you're asking!

The food inspection was done early in 2006, not long after they moved in and they have since passed - they wouldn't have continued to be allowed to serve meals if they hadn't complied. Unfortunately the site does not list any updates.
