Well, in this opinion I serve up number four in what is becoming a rather interesting tour of mediocre York pubs. Lets face it, York isn't exactly the mutts nuts when it comes to having a good night out. Yes Rach, its a nice city, but its pathetic for the evening. So, us lot have resigned ourselves to finding taverns that dish up fine, cheap beer, preferably with a Weakest Link machine.
The Judges Lodge has neither. Beer isn't expensive, but its not cheap. There isn't a Weakest Link machine, or even a Who Wants To Be A Millionaire machine. Or even some form of entertainment. Not even a TV. But it does offer....
Outside seating! Judges has a reasonably large area out the front of the pub, in a paved garden, with nice trees, just in front of one of the pedestrian streets of York. You can sit and watch the world go by. It's very pleasant, and its basically the only reason we go there.
Also, its right across the street from Varsity, where you can get flyers for the Gallery. (One of York's pants nightclubs. Actually, I can't really say that, because I always have a good laugh there.)
Furthermore, Judges has recently been refurbished inside. Now its a bit nicer! They knocked up a few extra places to park your pint, basically, and done up the toilets. To be fair though, the toilets are absolutely excellent compared with the Northern Wall (see my review) and the Hansom Cab (see my review).
So. To get to Judges from my starting point for all directions - the Fountain, in Parliament Street. Head north, towards Browns. Head down the street, apssing Borders on your right, and you'll come to a square. Head across it, aiming for the Post Office. Then, continue north, and oppopsite Varsity is Judges. Easy!
So, to recap. I haven't been to Judges in 6 months, because its been winter. Go there in summer, for a quiet pint in nice surroundings.
