Fundamentally, Brydon / Barrett is able to create comedy to appeal to all members of the audience. Personally I attanded the part of the tour in The Hawth, Crawley. Brydon has taken the character Keith Barrett from a humble cabbie driver / chauffeur in the hugely successful television series 'Marion and Geoff' to a captivating spoof Talk Show Host, the theme of the actual tour.
But, "it's not a show" as Keith reminds us at the start, and the comedy starts here. Fundamentally, Brydon / Barrett is able to create comedy to appeal to all members of the audience. In the first half, using the theme of divorce, Barrett dispenses his 'advice', reflecting on his own doomed marraige to the anonymous yet everescent Marion. Even for people who had not seen the tv series, this was still intensely entertaining.
The second half of the show took the theme of the newly-developed 'Keith Barret Show' from BBC2, where Barrett provides 'advice' to celebrity couples. Only here, it's two unsuspecting members of the audience... This element of surprise combined with Barrett's characteristic unpredictability, made for a intensely entertaining show.
After the show Rob Brydon met with members of the audience for a quick chat and to sign autographs. He signed several Marion and Geoff items for me, and even agreed to have a photo with me and my brother! (ciao points pending I will put it on this site!) The line was very long, but I thought it was great for him to spend time for his existing, and undoubtedly new fans.
I hope this tour starts again in 2006. Brydon has (thankfully) avioded the ever-to-common comedian pitfall of smutty, crude and offensive comedy. His performance was spot on, fresh and original, and, perhaps most importantly for Barrett, strangely believable..!
