Not forgetting the excellent Blackwell's bookshop just slightly to the west. As you'll have gathered, it's very central and convenient and this shows in the clientele which ranges from students to tourists to local workers from the bookshop and library.
So, on to the pub!
There are several ways into the maze that is the King's Arms. On my most recent visit I went in via the King's Arms bar door (Holywell Street entrance). The pub is divided into several rooms and snugs with a large open plan bar at the front (Parks Road entrance - don't ask me why the address is technically Holywell St. - it probably has to do with refurbishments that took place in the late 18th century and made the west side of the pub look like it does today) which is backed by a sprawl of characterful smaller rooms.
Wood panelling, old prints of college related themes, and pictures of sporting teams of times gone by comprise the decor. Dark wood tables of various sizes are available for groups of different sizes and the pub manages to seem full without feeling crowded. (I will mention here that this was a late afternoon visit. I've been here in the evenings when it is heaving and it does feel a bit claustrophobic then.)
The pub is run by Youngs who don't seem to have tampered with the traditional look and feel of a pub with has been along longer than they have. Beers are of the usual Youngs range including the curiously named 'Waggledance' which I haven't tried but if I drank beer I might. Most beer drinkers I've visited this pub with have gone for 6X which is Wadworth not Youngs. I don't know why but this is nearly universal. There is also an extensive wine list. The wine bottles are on clear and tempting view in the main bar and there are a lot of them. I don't think the King's Arms will ever run out of wine with that much around the place. As for myself, I had my customary cider. The round of pints of 6X and cider came to £4.55. Service is efficient and friendly.
But you don't have to drink to visit the King's Arms. Coffee and tea are also available as is a range of hot (traditional pub grub) and cold food (salad buffet).
The King's Arms is a very traditional pub. You can soak in the atmosphere of the place and imagine the learned debates that must have taken place here. (I did mention that this was in the afternoon!) When I visited fellow denizens of my snug included a young Continental couple who shared some coffee and two people studying Dryden's poetry in what looked very much like a very relaxed tutorial. I was lucky enough to have a window seat and so could watch the world go by while my partner ran to feed the parking meter in St. Clement's Car Park. But it's that sort of place. Take a book and go alone, take a friend, take loads of friends or meet them there - everyone is catered for. As long as you don't mind quiet!
Part of the pleasure of visiting this pub is its very age. People have been visiting this place for a very long time indeed and all for a similar purpose. The higgledy-piggledy rooms and details like the pulley controlled ventilation system (sounds primitive but it really works!) make a visit feel like a bit of time travel.
There is also some outside seating in the form of picnic tables at the front entrance if you feel so inclined. Again, a good opportunity for people watching while you relax.
A truly classic Oxford pub and well worth including in a crawl or visiting on its own.

It's also worth a visit to www.youngs.co.uk for information about facilities available at any Youngs pub.
Advantages: Caters for all the family all year round Disadvantages: None
The Kings Arms at Sandford has to be one of the best family pubs in Oxford, if not THE best. Situated at the side of Sandford Lock on the Thames, it can be accessed via footpath from along the river or by car. It is a very picturesque pub, and frequented by many families, especially during the summer months. It has an outdoor play area for kids with things such as wooden climbing buildings, swings and slides. It is protected from the river by a fence, ... ...your drink and stand by the side of the lock and watch the boats coming through. On horrible days it is still a great place because they have a family area inside too. They have a very large ball pit with hanging shapes to swing on (for the kids).
There is also a selection of sweet machines, so for 20p the kids can go get a few sweets. Older kids have the opportunity to play video games. You could have a day out at this pub as they do food and have ...

I went to the King's Arms on the recommendation of a couple of reviews on this site. Two people gave it 5 stars. I really can't see why.
LOCATION
On Holywell St., in downtown Oxford, the King's Arms is nicely situated. It is easy to find amid the beautifully ancient buildings that Oxford is so famous for.
ATMOSPHERE
Its charm is that it is an old-fashioned pub, with lots of rooms and alcoves, with creaking wooden floors. Its lack of charm is ... ...or whatever you Brits call the room where you relieve yourselves and wash your hands!) and not-so-clean floors.
FOOD
Six of us were at the table, and we were all leaning toward the Beef and Mushroom Pie. Four ended up having it. The verdict was that it was okay--the pastry was wonderful and the stew was bland. The chips that came with it were thick and average-tasting. Two of us went with something different for variety's sake. I made the mistake ...

Advantages: Good beer Disadvantages: Solid but unspectacular
The Kings Arms, or KA to aficionados, is one of the more well-established pubs in Oxford. It is frequented by students and fellows alike, though the absence of locals at busy times tells its own story - more on that later.
The KA is a pub in the mould of English tradition, serving bitter from proper taps and having a wide selection of beers from independent brewers, rather than pouring pints of Carlsberg or Fosters from refridgerated pumps (which, ... ...over £3 per pint for the privilege of drinking beers made popular not through taste but through expensive marketing).
Additionally, in the tradition of typical English pubs, the KA serves what is infamously known by the cliche of 'Fayre' - that is, food that I suppose people used to eat when nobody knew how to cook properly. Meat pie, shepherds' pie, fish and chips, scampi and chips are ubiquitous on the menu under the title 'Fayre'. In the best ...

Quick review of The Kings Arms (Oxford)
The King's Arms is one of the most popular pubs in the city centre. It has plenty of tables and chairs so even on busy evenings, you can squeeze in somewhere. It is open until midnight.
Selection of alcohol is great, although slightly pricier than most other pubs in Oxford (except the Turf)The bar staff are relatively attentive and keep there eyes out so you shouldn't be kept waiting for very long.
Pub grub is very tasty and usualy about £7 or thereabouts for a hearty main course. Service is very quick and the staff are friendly and helpful; they always come up and check that the food is ok. ...

Advantages: Wonderful country, with fantastic scenery and history Disadvantages: Dangerous at present time (Jan '06)
responsible for organising our visit and acting as guides throughout the 6 day whistle stop tour of this fantastic country.
The official language of the country is Arabic, but English is widely spoken, and indeed - at the time - the English were welcomed with larger open arms than any of our European compadres, partly because the then King had studied in either Oxford or Cambridge (Sorry, I can't recall which) and married an English woman.
Many people have misconceptions about the whole Middle East region, due to local customs and laws in Saudi Arabia where thieves still have their hands chopped off, terrible punishments occur for adultery (I won't go into it, it hurts just thinking about it!) and prohibition exists throughout (apart from in the hotels, which have special dispensation). Further misconceptions stem from the wars and religious ...
