Today’s is a review of my trip around the Lake District this weekend. I will try and give you an idea about how foot and mouth is still effecting this area. I will point out that with just a small amount of care, it will be a normal holiday meaning foot and mouth should not prevent you enjoying this wonderful area.
AIRA FORCE **********
Aira Force is a lovely waterfall, which is approximately 30 metres high in the National Park. Its on the way between Penrith and Windermere on the A 592 beside Ullswater, which means if you coming from the North or East this is a good point on entry into the Lake District. I would say it had approx. 80 car parking spaces on site for which there is a charge of £2.50 for 4 hours. However
car-parking tickets are valid in any other National Trust car parking as long as you ticket has not expired. Car parking is free to National Trust members and while we where there you could join for approx. £21.00.
The Waterfalls themselves are about ½ mile from the car park and I would suggest suitable walking shoes as the spray from the Falls can make the surround area and stairs slippery. I would definitely say that this location has not got suitable access to people which pushchairs or wheelchairs.
The Waterfall is very breath taking and you get a lovely view as footpaths run along the bottom and over the top of the Falls by bridge. I would allow approximately 1 and a half-hours to visit this location.
Due to foot and mouth certain footpaths that run into farmland are closed and you will need to disinfectant your shoes on leaving and entering the car park.
On site facilities include Tea room and toilets
BOWNESS ON WINDERMERE *********************
Don’t make the same mistake as we did. Windermere is itself about 5 miles away from Lake Windermere and the nearest place is Bowness. We found a car parking space there and attempted to walk down. We soon found out the error and headed for the Queens Public House….which was mistake number 2. Any place that serves Clauiflower which is still frozen and you can still see ice all over is best avoided .It must have came directly from the fridge without touching the pan.
This is by far the busiest of any place in the Lakes, therefore parking can be a problem. Bowness operates a park and ride service by a road train. Car parking again is £2.50 for 4 hours, but doesn’t include the return busfare of £1 return for each adult and 60p return for children. You will be highly entertained for the 5-minute journey by the conductor. Yesterday’s best joke was have you heard Yorkshire follow up to Sleepless in Seattle. Its called Sheepless in Settle. I had to tell that, it shows that people who industries have been hit very hard by Foot and mouth can still raise a smile and tell a joke
Firstly this hotel in not in Keswick and is approximately 4 miles away. I was looking for a hotel within walking distance to the wonderful pubs of Keswick and was disappointed to find it so far away. We had to drive into Keswick which meant someone had to drink Coke all night. Lucky my girlfriend did not feel like drinking so I sampled the local falling down water which was amongst I have tasted.
The hotel is in a wonderful position over looking Lake Derwentwater. Within walking distance is also the Lodore waterfall which I couldn’t get to see due to the heavy rain today. Parking is free at the hotel and is across the road from the main building. The hotel has approximately 80 bedrooms and claims to be a 4 star. If I had paid the brochure price of £79 per person B and B I would have made such a fuss about the maintenance and general care of our bedroom. The room did show general signs of being run down which surprised me as the rest of the hotel was in tiptop condition. Breakfast was the biggest joke with me ordering Bacon, sausage, Black pudding and tomatoes as hangover food. I was surprised to get my food quickly, but was less that delighted to find 1 sausage at one side of the plate, one rash of bacon at the other, one black pudding at the opposite of the plate. Or put it another way if the little piece of bacon where lonely they would have to send a text message to talk to the Sausage. I am six foot four and weigh 15 stone…so I look like this would fill me until the pubs open…I think not my lord. I even ate the little green decoration thingy cos I was that hungry.
The good location and name of the hotel do not mean enough this time for me to recommend this hotel.
General *******
I hope that you do visit the Lakes, as this weekend Ive had a lovely time. I would recommend the drive around the B5289 from Keswick to Buttermere and then back up to Keswick. Allow about 2 hours and you will not be disappointed by the breath taking scenery. The banks are steep and mostly single tracked, but with a bit of care will reward you.
All over the country roads are mates with disinfected, please use the speed limit as advised otherwise the disinfected will not work.
Please visit the Lakes, but make sure you abide with warnings about staying away from Foot and Mouth restricted areas.
Regards
Barry

Reading this brought back alot of memories :) I went on holiday there for the first time with my parents last year and really enjoyed it though we had to keep going over those disinfected things but it was an experience and one i will never ever forget :)
