This fantastic place has closed as Jean-Jacques retired recently after his 75th Birthday. I hope you enjoy your deserved retirement! The Lauging Onion was a Brighton institution. The owner/chef/host cooked first, washed up, and then entertained diners with his 1950's era cabaret act. Thanks to the cheap house wine, by the end of the night guest s would would be emotionally singing along to the la vie en rose, or heckling for Ave Maria. Jean Jacques would often end by singing that love was all that counted - in the alchohol fuelled world of the Lauging Onion it really was. Sadly Missed. The nights out I had here genuinely have been some of the highlights of my life. There will never be another like it.

THE LAUGHING ONION STAYS OPEN DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND
Jean Jacques has been inundated with regulars wishes, sad that he is retiring. Consequently he has issued the statement below & is now continuing to open twice monthly. He does ultimatley intend to stop the cooking, washing-up, cleaning-up etc & just concentrate on the entertaining. Consequently a new lease will still be available for an appropriate person to take over and continue the good popular ... ...to carry on entertaining in the restaurant twice monthly.
JJ's message to his friends:
"I would like to thank you all for your support since 1976 and for the calls asking me not retire.
Therefore, I have decided to open every other Saturday".
