I am a keen lover of all things singing and dancing. I have loved the ‘Disney’ story of The Lion King since it came out at the cinema, and was dying to see the show at the Lyceum Theatre. I was lucky enough to see this award winning musical last year.
The story: Young Simba is son of the King of Pride Rock, Mufasa, so is heir to the throne. Simba (a lion) meets Nala (a lioness) when they are young, and they become best of friends. The beginning of the story tracks their friendship, which turns into love when we see them age. Simba’s father dies, when Scar (the baddie!) kills him in order to be King. Simba is supposed to become king, but Scar ends up taking over the throne through his lying to Simba and banishing him from Pride Rock. Nala finds Simba, who has befriended Timone and Pumbaa, a warthog and his friend, a very amusing double act I must add. As with most Disney stories, it all ends happily ever after, with Simba returning, and making a very fine king.
The show: The majority of the cast are native Africans, and their voices are truly superb. The actress, who plays a baboon, is amazing, babbling away in her mother tongue, it is actually very funny. All of the cast have fabulous voices, and they act the story so well. The scenery and props are excellent, particularly when the stampede takes place (Simba is chased by herds of animals). The costumes are without a doubt a highlight of the show, with huge Giraffes and a life size elephant. Each animal has a person inside it, and the costume dances in a way like the proposed animal would. The best scene is probably ‘Circle of Life’ when all of the animals appear. Animals come into each box, and some in the royal circle. The music is all played in the boxes, on African drums and other instruments. The music is by Elton John and Tim Rice, which indicates the style!
Overall: This show is by far the best musical in London. The tickets are highly sought after, and I recommend booking up as early as possible. I am hoping to see the show again sometime. You can see the stage wherever you are seated, so any tier of tickets would be fine. We sat in the Royal Circle and had an excellent view of the entire stage. I would recommend this show to people of all ages; you certainly do not need children to go. The tickets are fairly expensive, but well worth it. I can't wait to see it again!
