Britain's most famous chippy!

Advantages: Good quality food
Disadvantages: Long queues, expensive, limited vegetarian options

The Magpie Cafe in Whitby is one of the most famous restaurants in England, outside of London of course, where such things are two a penny. Unlike the majority of these other famous restaurants however the Magpie does noes deliver fancy haute cuisine, instead it is famous for its fish and chips.

I am a regular visitor to Whitby, a small quaint little fishing town in the north east of England and each time that I visit here I never ...
...orderly queue outside waiting for the doors to open.

The success of this place is little short of a phenomenon. Having quickly won over the locals and regular visitors to the town with its quality fish and chips, the final surge in popularity came when the famous food critic, Rick Stein announced that this place served the best fish and chips in Britain. This saw people flocking here from all over the country and indeed from other ... more

The Best Fish and Chips Ever!

Advantages: Melt in the mouth food. Friendly staff.
Disadvantages: Long queues sometimes to get in. Its that good.

...recently weny to Whitby for the first time with my husband and 12 year old daughter. What a fabulous day we had. The highlight was the meal we had at the Magpie cafe. We had cod and chips and they were fabulous. The chips were the best I have ever had and the batter on the fish literally melted in the mouth. Don't go if you are not hungry though as the portions are gigantic. We had rhubarb and raspberry meringes to follow. If you don't like fish ...
...my daughter who enjoyed all the fuss. The service was a bit slow but then it was packed to capacity. In fact it is so popular that there is a permanant queue down the street. I hate queueing but I promise you its worth the wait. I believe a michellin starred chef rated the Magpie as having the best fish and chips in Britain and after tasting them I have to agree! ...

Quick review of The Magpie Cafe, Whitby

Have been to the cafe many times in the past and it has always been good, however when we visited two days ago we used the takeaway, and it was dreadfull. We ordered haddock and chips, which was cooked to order. The chips were undercooked, pale, limp and greasy and the fish was so bad my other half refused to eat hers and our dogs had most of it. The overriding taste was that of stale cooking oil. Horrible. ...

Too Tasty for Words

Advantages: Wonderfull food
Disadvantages: Busy at times

One of the best places to eat I have come across is The Magpie Cafe in Whitby, it is situated down thepier and has a world wide following, in fact it has had awards from Egon Ronay and les Routiers, plus more. It really specialises in fish dishes but there are a lot more on offer. You can choose from an extensive menu, that covers cod, Haddock, Plaice, Lobster, shellfish etc to Salads which come with The Magpies homemade pickles and coleslaws. Or a homemade pie.It really is a huge menu and they even cater for children, with specially made to order meals such as "smiley face sausage and mash". The fish is gorgeous and you can choose small, medium or large!, medium is sufficient for me and costs around £5. Also on offer is an extensive wine list, which allows you to have even one glass of many varieties. The sweets are ...
