My wife and I have literally just returned from a very disappointing weekend booked for our wedding anniversary. I am so angry about it that I have come on line straight away to write a review...

Where do I start ? The room we booked had a lovely view (apart from the skip - see below) and all seemed reasonably well, although come Saturday evening, we realised we were in the room directly above the function room currently hosting a wedding party. We had loud thumping music until midnight. Despite complaining, the best they could offer us was a different room which also above the function room - thus not much help.

I complained several times, but never received an apology and it was implied that it was my fault for not seeing that they "do weddings" on their website... After some serious wrangling (culminating in a row with an extremely rude manager at the reception desk), the best they could offer was a measly £30 discount (off £95 for the Saturday night). Apparently we should have been told about the party when we made our booking, although this is not true, and the manager again implied that my wife was a liar as it was essentially her word against theirs. Obviously though, if we had been told we would hardly have said yes to the enforced late night, bearing in mind my wife is eight months pregnant and it was our wedding anniversary...

Further to that, there were several other issues:
The jacuzzi, sauna and steam room weren't working
The curtains didn't shut in our room (room 5)
One of the lamps in our room was hanging off the wall
The TV wasn't tuned in properly
The shower had a mind of it's own, either changing temp and/or sliding down the pole (there was no bath too...)
The coffee at breakfast was actually instant coffee, but served in a cafetiere - what's the point of that other than duping guests ? This sort or measly behaviour is unforgivable in my book !

The general state of the hotel is shabby and run down - I don't expect it's a permanent feature, but there was an overflowing skip in the lower car park as part of our view - nice touch ! To make matters even worse, the food is grossly over priced considering quality - you'll get a much better meal for (admittedly only slightly) less at the Bear Inn in Crickhowell.

I feel exploited and extremely angry that they have no concept of customer service and are quite happy to take my money and then tell me to "get out of the hotel"... To me, this does not seem like a reasonable and sensible way to run a business and certainly no way to treat paying guests

On the plus side, if you really want to stay in the area, my wife and I stayed in the Gliffaes Hotel just up the road a couple of years ago, which although not having the (so called) spa and leisure facilities is worth every penny for the excellent service, extremely high quality rooms and lovely food. Stay there instead and don't make the same mistake we've just made.

Yeah, I'd have thought it would have made sense to put wedding guests above the function room too ! Wouldn't have been the hardest thing for them to work out, although I think they were more interested on filling up space and making a quick buck off some unsuspecting mug (namely me!) We were charged £95 (less £30) for the Saturday night and £75 for the Sunday night that we were there. A rip-off considering the noise, and then the general state of the place, like the spa being largely out of order... Am still seething about this ! Seems a lot of the reviews on tripadvisor dot com also agree with me about the management. I am so annoyed at places like this thinking they can just rip off a succession of unsuspecting people and don't care about repeat business or customer satisfaction. Sadly such a common attitude with businesses these days. I wish there was something more I could do. I've even considered contacting the local paper about that guys attitude!

What a shame your anniversary was spoilt like this. They might have thought their wedding was more important than your comfort for your stay but it's good that you've written this review - if it puts people off staying in such a place, you'll have done lots of people a favour. If they host weddings there, wouldn't it make sense to make sure they have better sound proofing? Or make sure they don't put guests above the function room that are not connected to the wedding - surely some of the wedding guests would have been staying overnight - they should have put them in those rooms, what poor organisation on the hotel's part! Would be handy to know how much you paid per night too :)
