The room was very nice, a good size, and well fitted in terms of what was available and space, as was the bathroom. One complaint I would have was that the mini-bar automatically charges you for anything moved - which isn't very good if you're other half likes to fiddle with stuff.
I didn't dine in either of the two hotel restaurants - The French and The Colony - but they both looked ok, and the buffet breakfast, served in The Colony, was the best I've had at any hotel for a good few years. A good selection of cereals and fruit as well as a selection of standard hot items, which were hot and weren't greasy - which seems quite an achievement in hotels at the moment. The bar areas, while not cheap, were both cosy enough to sit and enjoy a drink with a paper and buzzy enough to arrange to meet friends.
One downside was that refit seemed to have missed the Health Club. While this has all the facilities I wanted (gym, pool, sauna), it needed sprucing up a bit.
Advantages: Location, customer service Disadvantages: Electrical faults, noise
arrival point: Manchester Oxford Road rail station.
The GMEX Premier Inn is within walking distance. It's located on Lower Moseley Street, opposite the MidlandHotel which faces Manchester Central Station, and only about five minutes walk from Oxford Road station.
This is clearly the 'conference centre' of Manchester. The area is littered with hotels (there's another Premier even closer to the station, and a Hilton across the road, and just about everything in between); during the day it bustles; at night it shuts down. It took us quite some time to find a money machine, and we signally failed to find a late-night shop. There are, however, a number of restaurants - a couple of kebab shops and the ubiquitous McDonalds.
So far, so good.
