Advantages: Historical town with many attractions nestling in the midst of the South Downs. Disadvantages: Over run with tourists in the summer. Half the major attractions shut in winter.
..., and I was christened there too. Nowadays, I live about half an hour away from Arundel, but still make the odd trip there several times a year just to explore the shops or partake of an afternoon tea.
The town is very laid back and always friendly. It's a lovely place to have a wander around in at your own pace. A spring and summer visit will guarantee lots to see and do there, though you will pay the price as the town can often be over run with tourists, making car parking a bit of a nightmare. A late autumn or winter visit will find Arundel a little quieter and you're more likely to be able to park in the centre (try the High Street or Tarrant Street). If you do go there in the summer, then try and head for the pay and display car park at the bottom of the hill near to the river (Mill Road). If you leave your car there for the day...

Advantages: Lovely rooms, great smellies Disadvantages: I didn't get to try the restaurant - maybe next time!
...I've never been to Arundel before which is a bit of a shame as it seems to be a lovely little town although I'd have to admit it seems a bit over-supplied with antique shops and speciality little stores selling things you don't need, like a whole shop just selling walking sticks for example.
I nearly didn't stay at the Town House and visit Arundel at all due to a bit of a 'cock-up on the communication front' with the lady who was helping to book me a room. She told me that the Town House wouldn't take a booking unless I told them when I was going to arrive and I got in a bit of a snit, fuming "It's not a bloody dentist, why do I need an appointment?" Exasperated, I told her to tell the hotel to take a hike and asked her to book me somewhere else (in fact the awful MillHouse in Ashington). Only after she told me that the Mill was 'All...

Advantages: Stunningly colourful flower display. Great free attraction. Historic origins. Disadvantages: Can be crowded during the day. Two days and it's all swept away!
...to the other.
This is not a review of Arundel as a holiday destination - nor indeed place to live, the association with the Catholic Norfolk family, their castle, the town and the Cathedral is however integral to this review. Without the Norfolk's this event would not be here to take place, nor come to think of it would the Cathedral be here to house it!
In historical terms Arundel Cathedral is relatively "modern". It may look like a remarkably well preserved gothic building, but in actual fact it was only founded in 1873. It is a building deserving of a separate review to itself, save to say, here, that it makes a truly beautiful and fitting setting for an annual event such as the Carpet of Flowers.
Visitors this year were doubly treated, not only were the flowers themselves the best display that we have seen during the four years that we have...

I first found this book after reading up on the Richard and Judy Summer Reads 2007, and after loving some of the other books on their list, I decided I would try this one. This isn't normally the kind of book I would go for, but I really liked the blurb... more
