Moorings

Advantages: Local. Large old house but modern. Charismatic.
Disadvantages: You are best having a car with you.

The Moorings Hotel has been a fixture in Motherwell since I was very young, and generations have always enjoyed staying, eating and partying there. The main house was custom built in 1891 for Archibald Colville, the son of one of Scotland's foremost steel dynasties, and have sympathetically upgraded and extended to provide all the comfort and style one would expect from a three star Hotel. Most recent addition is the new bar and lounge area a few years ago - and at this exact moment builders are on site adding decking for a 'beer garden'. Three star accommodation which now has 31 bedrooms - each have en-suite facilities (with bath and shower), plus hairdryer, trouser press, remote control television with satellite, direct dial telephone, data port point and tea and coffee making facilities. Food in the hotel is very well ...

Royal Oak - After a Revolution...

Advantages: The bed was clean....
Disadvantages: Poor Decor, Poor Service, Expensive, Poor Food

So, work has been taking up most of my life at the moment and in the quest to earn myself enough money to remove all of my debt and get on the property ladder, I have been working all hours that God sends and also travelling all over the country being a salesman, pre-sales and techie. This means that I have been staying in huge amounts of hotels. The ones that I have found on Ciao, I am setting about reviewing them. So, onto the Royal Oaks in Sevenoaks. I was in Sevenoaks to undertake a techie course to enable me to design and analyse networks better and subsequently offer more services to our clients. Since the course was in Brasted and all of the hotels had been taken due to the inability of my company to book anything more than 10 minutes in advance, Sevenoaks was the nearest viable place to stay. The royal oak hotel ...

Gimmee Moore

Advantages: Some really poignant songs
Disadvantages: None really

Christy Moore - Ride On. 1984. I have long been a fan of Irish music, and a fan of protest songs, from John Lennon to The Clash, so it is fair to say that I have a fair collection of Irish protest music, some of which has a distinctly anti-British feel. Before anyone slates me for writing a review of well known IRA sympathisers' songs, many of which are very supportive of the IRA cause, let me say this. Like it or not, there has been a conflict between the British and Irish for hundreds of years, and the troubles of the 70's and 80's were not new. It was inevitable that songs would be written, and inevitable that whoever wrote them would have a subjective slant. This album is not just about the IRA by the way, it also chronicles other 'struggles' such as the Spanish Civil War and the El Salvador conflicts. Moore himself ...
