Once upon a time in Nottingham

Advantages: A view of history through everyday objects in Nottingham
Disadvantages: No access for wheelchairs

The table was covered in the bright green cloth of Lincoln scattered with children's games, the reflection in the large mirror of the heavy Victorian sideboard reproduce the image of the china tea service, the brass oil lamp and the big family bible. In the other corner was the Grandfather clock no longer ticking and the hearth of the fire place with it's big cast iron fender framing the roaring open coal fire reminded me of the days of my childhood ...
...front parlour right down to the piano that now lay silent but in my mind I could hear the tinkling notes that over 30 years ago I had heard when my brother attempted to play. But I wasn't in Aunt Carrie's house, I was stood in the Victorian parlour in the Museum of Nottingham Life at the Brew House Yard.

With a week off work and the weather cold and blustery with unpredictable showers, Mum and I were having another day out but then ... more

No Highwaymen Here..

Advantages: Affordable, FREE to Residents, Packed with Artefacts, Appeals to the majority
Disadvantages: Little disabled access

The Museum of Nottingham Life, at the Brewhouse Yard Museum is centrally situated in Nottingham itself, just a few minutes walk from the Broadmarsh shopping area and Nottingham Castle. I was attracted to the museum most recently via a link from the Nottingham City Council Website. The museum appealed to me as it was described as a museum of Social History over the last 300 years, and this was in reference to Social History within Nottingham homes ...
...access to Nottingham Castle and the visit to either attraction can be made within a week of the first purchase, the entry fee is more of the order of a small donation, than a fee that would prevent anyone from entering. The Museum itself is situated adjacent to the intriguingly named "Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem" Inn, which claims to be the oldest inn in England and dates back to 1189AD. There is a large number of caves within the city of Nottingham, ...

WHOS TURN IS IT TO EMPTY THE CHAMBERPOT

Advantages: Steeped in history and a lot of fun.
Disadvantages: Not accesible for wheelchairs.

...that then? Then I realised that the place in question is known to my family as the Brewhouse yard museum. Oh the memories of this museum over the years. We are very lucky in Nottingham to have a lot of quality museums, free of charge, and as children we very often used to pack up a few sandwiches and spend the day trecking round the museums together. There was the castle, the canal museum, the Nottingham costume Museum and of course Brewhouse yard, ...
...a journey around Nottingham in the last 200 years.No...wait... I have a better idea. I have a very special auntie Eileen, who I love dearly. She is 75 years old now and doesn't get out very often.I love to spend time with her.I have found that as she has got older she seems to talk an awful lot more about the memories that are so dear to her. We love to take her to the museum and listen as she laughs out loud and tells the stories of life for her ...

Nottingham is MORE than Forest...

Advantages: Shopping, attractions, history, pubs...
Disadvantages: Crowds, disruption from the tram work.

~ The CASTLE gatehouse and walls are all original and medieval but the original castle was destroyed by fire at the end of the civil war. In its place was built a ?ducal? palace that is now a museum housing some fine exhibits from Nottingham?s past and it also houses fine and contemporary art displays. The castle grounds are all landscaped and offer some spectacular views over the city and for miles beyond on a good, clear day. Just outside the castle gates is a statue of ROBIN HOOD, which has to be the most photographed object in the city. Opposite this statue is the SEVERNS BUIDING, which is probably Nottingham?s oldest building and is another good place to buy official NOTTINGHAM LACE. Below the castle rock is the BREWHOUSE YARD MUSEUM which houses some excellent exhibits tracing Nottingham life back through the ages. This is the place to come ...
