The undiscovered Normandy

Advantages: Relatively unknown to English tourists
Disadvantages: I can't think of any

All the reviews I have read have been on 'Basse Normandie'. Whilst this area certainly has its attractions (you can't argue with the Bayeux Tapestry or the Landing Beaches) so many English people are missing out on the secret attractions of 'Haute Normandie', long known to the French. Parisians have certainly discovered the pleasures of owning a second home in this peaceful and beautiful area 'entre Seine et mer'. The best way to visit the Seine Maritime is probably via Transmanche Ferries from Newhaven to Dieppe although the Speedferries terminal at Boulogne is only an hour and a half's drive on empty motorways and offers the cheapest ferry route to France. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately for those who have discovered this area, most British tourists land at Dieppe and head straight for the main road out of town. Dieppe ...

Seeing the sights in Normandy

Advantages: Small and lightweight; lots of photos
Disadvantages: Information on individual places is brief

for children and Norman abbeys. The next thirty pages divide Normandy into four areas - northeastern, central, northwestern and southern - and give us suggestions as to the best sights, places to eat, cultural events or unusual places to visit in a particular region. No matter where you are headed in Normandy, you will find ideas for places to go and things to do. The final section of the book is entitled Streetsmart and opens with practical information such as how to get to Normandy, how to travel around once you are there, and where to find information. There is even a page listing ten things to avoid, from expensive international phone calls in hotels to crowded places in the height of the holiday season. There are nine pages on accommodation of various types, from luxury hotels to campsites or self-catering holidays - the top ten of each are ...

Review of Top 10: Normandy - Fiona Duncan

Normandy

Advantages: Easy Access from UK
Disadvantages: None that I can think of

I have been to Normandy four times now and have never tired of it. I'm planning to visit again in August next year. Normandy is on of the most historic of the French 'departments'. With the obvious connections of William the Conquerer, to the almost modern day history of the D-Day Landing Beaches. In Normandy you will never be stuck for something to do. We usually choose to stay at Deauville, a resort on the coast. Deauville is easily accessible from all of the major ports in Normandy, 30 mins drive from Caen and Le Harve and about 2 1/2 hours from Cherbourg and Dieppe. Tourist attractions include the Bayeux Tapestry, Bayeux being about 2 hours drive from Deauville. The D-Day Landing Beaches, scattered along the Norman coast, with museums and other related attractions such as Mulberry Harbour and Pegasus Bridge. Caen ...
