Well, here's number three in my reasonably short series of pubs in York. The Northern Wall is the pub we always start the night at, for reasons that will become obvious later. First....how to get there.
OK, pretend you're at the fountain in York City Centre, on Parliament Street. Walk towards Marks and Spencer which is south of the fountain. Youll come to a T-junction on a busy road. Turn left (to the east), and walk towards the Stonebow complex. About 100-150m on the left is the Northern Wall. If you reach the Job Centre, you've gone too far. The other way is by driving into the city centre from Foss Island Road, The Wall will be on the left (after the job centre.)
The reason our nights always start at the Northern Wall? Three words......Four Pint Jug. After 5pm, the NW does a deal whereby you get four pints for the price of three, and the whole lot is served in a big four pint jug. Thats £5.73 for bitter (Worthingtons) or about £6.20 for lager (Carling). Not bad. However, you have to pay a £2 deposit for the jug, which is returned if you don't break it. You can always ask for the 4 pints, in glasses though (if you're a piker)Also, its 2 for the price of 1 for some alcopops, and a couple of bottled beers. Furthermore, if you take your NUS card, you can get student discount - 50p of every pint (not for the 4 pint jug though!). It's really good value. Other beers on the bar are Smith Extra Smooth, Guinness, Carling, Carling Premier, and Worthington's, plus a full range of bottles. All all standard prices.
Basically, beer price is the only real criteria for our choice of pub. That's why we go to the Hansom Cab. The Northern Wall is a bit of a let down in other departments. The seating is reasonable - lots of tables, and outside in summer. No sofas or anything. There's a few dated games, no Weakest Link or Millionaire. The toilets aren't too bad (better than the Hansom Cab). There is, however, several TVs, and generally have football showing. I watched the Leeds match last night in there. I enjoyed it greatly.
The Wall is basically the place where we go to get cheap drinks and get the night started. Its not the classiest of pubs, but cheap drinks rule! Also, its near the city centre, and not far from the bus stop, so it ain't half bad.
Advantages: Sitting outside Disadvantages: No really good beer deals
pleasant, and its basically the only reason we go there.
Also, its right across the street from Varsity, where you can get flyers for the Gallery. (One of York's pants nightclubs. Actually, I can't really say that, because I always have a good laugh there.)
Furthermore, Judges has recently been refurbished inside. Now its a bit nicer! They knocked up a few extra places to park your pint, basically, and done up the toilets. To be fair though, the toilets are absolutely excellent compared with the NorthernWall (see my review) and the Hansom Cab (see my review).
So. To get to Judges from my starting point for all directions - the Fountain, in Parliament Street. Head north, towards Browns. Head down the street, apssing Borders on your right, and you'll come to a square. Head across it, aiming for the Post Office. Then, continue north ...
Advantages: One of the nicest pibs in York, live music, Millionaire, massive toilets Disadvantages: A little bit out of the way
£1.80 for a pint of Worthington's, but someone has to pay for the upkeep of such a beautiful pub, I suppose.
There's lots of seating, and surprisingly, it is possble to sit in the pub without the live music overpowering conversation. I like to sit in the courtyard, because its usually warm, and traditional in a nice way, rather than traditional in a 'I-can't-be-bothered-to-upgrade' kind of way. Nice.
On the down side, this pub is a little out of the way. Its not right in the city centre, and on the opposite side of the town from the famed Micklegate Run. However, if you follow this well trodden path (by us lot anyway) of -
1.Bus Stop (6:45pm Friday) - Walk into the city centre past Alders. Turn right at the T-junction. Go past Pizza Hut to the NorthernWall.
2.The NorthernWall (6:50pm) - Sink a four-pint jug. See review of this ...
Advantages: Very Interesting Place Disadvantages: None
the Cloud God, Rain God and Wind God. In imperial days, Chinese people believed that the sky was in circular shape and the earth was square. On the basis of this traditional concept, the circle was widely adopted in the design of the temple?s main building. Tian Tan is enclosed with a long wall. The northern part within the wall is semicircular symbolizing the heavens and the southern part is square symbolizing the earth. The northern part is higher than the southern part. This design shows that the heaven is high and the earth is low and the design reflected an ancient Chinese thought of ?the heaven is round and the earth is square?.
I have been to Tian Tan three times. I am very impressed by ?triple Sound Stone? and ?Echo Wall?.
Triple Sound Stone
There are some rectangular stones in Tian Tan. People call them ?Triple Sound Stones ...
