Well, here's number three in my reasonably short series of pubs in York. The Northern Wall is the pub we always start the night at, for reasons that will become obvious later. First....how to get there.
OK, pretend you're at the fountain in York City Centre, on Parliament Street. Walk towards Marks and Spencer which is south of the fountain. Youll come to a T-junction on a busy road. Turn left (to the east), and walk towards the Stonebow complex. About 100-150m on the left is the Northern Wall. If you reach the Job Centre, you've gone too far. The other way is by driving into the city centre from Foss Island Road, The Wall will be on the left (after the job centre.)
The reason our nights always start at the Northern Wall? Three words......Four Pint Jug. After 5pm, the NW does a deal whereby you get four pints for the price of three, and the whole lot is served in a big four pint jug. Thats £5.73 for bitter (Worthingtons) or about £6.20 for lager (Carling). Not bad. However, you have to pay a £2 deposit for the jug, which is returned if you don't break it. You can always ask for the 4 pints, in glasses though (if you're a piker)Also, its 2 for the price of 1 for some alcopops, and a couple of bottled beers. Furthermore, if you take your NUS card, you can get student discount - 50p of every pint (not for the 4 pint jug though!). It's really good value. Other beers on the bar are Smith Extra Smooth, Guinness, Carling, Carling Premier, and Worthington's, plus a full range of bottles. All all standard prices.
Basically, beer price is the only real criteria for our choice of pub. That's why we go to the Hansom Cab. The Northern Wall is a bit of a let down in other departments. The seating is reasonable - lots of tables, and outside in summer. No sofas or anything. There's a few dated games, no Weakest Link or Millionaire. The toilets aren't too bad (better than the Hansom Cab). There is, however, several TVs, and generally have football showing. I watched the Leeds match last night in there. I enjoyed it greatly.
The Wall is basically the place where we go to get cheap drinks and get the night started. Its not the classiest of pubs, but cheap drinks rule! Also, its near the city centre, and not far from the bus stop, so it ain't half bad.
