Just come back from a three night break at The Old Quay House Hotel in Fowey (pronounced Foy) in Cornwall.
Having done a lot of internet research to have chosen the Old Quay hotel in the first place, and then whilst staying there to have been able to look at the alternatives, I am certain this is the best hotel in Fowey by a distance.
The hotel proved to be an excellent location in the centre of the town.
A lovely hotel right in the centre of Fowey. Don't be put off by the idea of staying in one of the "rooftop view" rooms, as they actually overlook the street outside, which is so nice first thing in the morning. The sun terrace at the back of the hotel is a great place to enjoy a glass of wine, chill out, read a book and watch the boats go by.
Fowey is a town with very narrow streets and stepping out of the hotel into Fore St is such a lively and lovely experience. We stayed in Room 2 which had a lovely bathroom {although with towel hooks which couldn't hold the towels!} and a fab shower
The rooms are contemporary and with a HUGE bed!! There is no bar as such, but a nice area to enjoy a late drink in. The room decor and ensuite facilities were of a very good standard.
The shower room was fine but note that not all rooms have a bath.
Breakfast was something of a highlight. Cold options include cereal, dried fruits, yogurt and muffins. Cooked breakfasts, from ‘full English’ to pancakes and maple syrup, never disappointed. In fine weather breakfast on the terrace is really great.
On the one occasion we had an evening meal in the hotel we found it very pleasant. The food is prepared and cooked to perfection. The only downside was the use of nuts in most of the desserts. If this would be a problem I recommend mentioning it in advance. I have no doubt that the chef could prepare something that would suit.
There are numerous alternative venues for an evening meal with a range of prices to suit everyone. The restaurant was amazing with a menu that was both exciting and delicious.
All the staff we met were friendly. Our cases were carried to the room and we received helpful advice on possible activities for the day.
We bought a council parking permit from the Tourist Information Office. This enabled us to park in a long stay car park about 10 minutes walk from the hotel. Most days we enjoyed the walk but it could be a slight nuisance at times.
We found it to be a wonderful retreat in deepest cornwall. The views of the estuary are stunning and the bedrooms are contempary and stylish. The Host. Jane is very welcoming and we often shared a vodka tonic with her befor dinner, though its not compulsory!
The village is delightful and its a great base for exploring Cornwall.
Try the scones and cream tea's in the restaurant on the quayside, theyre calorific. If you want a change of restaurant there's an abundance in the village.
Overall we were very happy during our time at the Old Quay House Hotel. It isn't a budget option but the individuality and professionalism of a private hotel and the superb location make it hard to beat. This is a good relaxing hotel in a nice location.
