The Old White Swan

Advantages: One of the nicest pibs in York, live music, Millionaire, massive toilets
Disadvantages: A little bit out of the way

...about my pubs in York. The Old White Swan is one of my favourites, and in my opinion I definitely under-use it. Firstly, how to get there.

From my general start point of the fountain in Parliament Street, head north-east towards Efe's kebab van. If you have any sense, stop there and get some food, and your photo taken (which will be posted on the van the following week). Incidentally, I rate Efe's 6 out of 5 for food. Anyway, from ...
...Old White Swan is on the left. On Fridays, there will be 2 bouncers. The large one with the waxed head is Andy - he's cool. Enter.

The Old White Swan has distinct areas. There is a nice courtyard with vines and stuff in the centre, which is excellent for sitting all year round. To the left is the restaurant area, which you can sit in with beer. Straight ahead is one of the bars, the smaller one, an area which features the toilets, ... more

No, you can't go into the Roman Bath....

Advantages: Near to Efe's and the city centre, with live music
Disadvantages: Well, its just a bit mingin!

do, however, beat the legendary Ferryboat Inn in Thorganby......there, the urinal is a brick wall with a bit of guttering diverting fluids into a drain. Nevertheless, the Roman Bath is one of the few places where live music can be found in York on a Friday night. However, the pub does have notable deficiencies, so you wouldn't really want to stop there for more than a half hour. On a slightly related note, if you want to get more information on York pubs, please read my opinions in the 'Home » City Guide » Nightlife Guide » Pubs » York (Pubs)' category. Also, my opinion on the Old White Swan contains a pub crawl route around the named pubs, which the Roman Bath does not feature in, but is easily squeezed in around the Efe's period. Happy drinking! ...

The Handsome Cab

Advantages: Cheap Beer, location.
Disadvantages: Lack of seating

. And....the ultimate instrument for a good pub....... The Weakest Link machine! However, its at the abnormally high price of £1 per play. This is why you should go to The Old White Swan or the Bay Horse (both reviewed or soon to be reviewed), or the underwater King's Arms in York where its 50p per play. The Cab also has a reasonably good juke box. Furthermore, the Hansom cab has reasonably un-peaky toilets. Clean but small. Thats fine by me. Food is served at a reasonable price considering this pub is smack bang in the centre of York. Sandwiches and Yorkshires - standard York Pub fare. All in all, the Hansom Cab is a great pub for about 7 or 8pm on a night out. You can get in 3 pints of Sam's and a go on the Weakest Link for under £5, possibly sit in an incredibly comfortable seat. Its also right in the centre of town, handy ...

Beware the portions are huge!

Advantages: Huge portions, good food
Disadvantages: None

. Diet coke does get a bit boring when you are out for a meal, fancy a drink and can't have one because you have to drive home! So with the glowing recommendations in mind, we set off to visit The Black Swan one evening during our short break. The pub is one of two in the village. The other being The Dacre Arms, which also serves meals and had some good recommendations, but based purely on what I had read we decided upon The Black Swan. From the outside, The Black Swan looks like one of those typical old fashioned country pubs with its white walls and tiled roof. The building has actually been there since the around 1830. There is ample car parking in the large car park to the side. Inside, there was a large bar down one side of the pub and a games area on the other side of the bar. At the rear of the pub is a function room, which looked ...
