As a child I would go to a number of cafes for a break whilst out shopping in Dumfries town centre. I remember the little Italian run cafes cum chip shops very well but for a real treat we would go to The Pancake Place. Now there is a wider choice of cafes, coffee shops, bistros and bars to grab a snack but I always have fond memories. So when I was last in town meeting up with an old school friend The Pancake Place was an ideal place to catch up and wander down memory lane.
The Pancake Place is located in the centre of Dumfries on English Street. It is part of a small Scottish chain with a number of restaurants in most major Scottish towns and cities. I have eaten in the Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling branches as well as the Dumfries one. It’s a well loved institution in Dumfries and is always pretty busy. On our visit today at lunchtime we were very lucky getting a table. It’s an ideal place for coffee whilst out shopping, a family lunch or perhaps a children’s party.
The Dumfries branch is fairly large with perhaps 24 tables. However I do find it can get very cramped when it is busy as the tables seem to be very close together and the aisles between them are not that wide. I am not sure I would recommend someone with a buggy or wheelchair.
The menu of The Pancake Place is fairly varied with a number of options for a light snack or lunch. They do a wide range of pancakes with both sweet and savoury fillings and toppings. They have a choice of four regular filled savoury pancakes (Mexican chilli, chicken Creole, mushroom Stroganoff and chicken and ham). These cost around about £5. They also have an all-day breakfast range with traditional American style pancakes with maple syrup and bacon or a full Scottish breakfast (both £5.95.) You could add toast to these for £1.05 extra. Those of you with a sweet tooth are in for a treat. They have full sized sweet pancakes for about £5 with fillings such as Bramley Apple or seasonal fruits. The spoon sized pancakes are small sweet ones with toppings such as banana, maple syrup, jam and ice cream. these are about £3 and are ideal as a pick-me-up on a shopping trip. There are also a number of specials on the blackboard.
It is not just pancakes at the Pancake Place. they do a nice selection of panninis, baps, pizzas, burgers and pastas. The panninis are roughly £3 whilst the burgers are round about £6. I think you could get these slightly cheaper elsewhere. I do not think I have eaten anything but pancakes in The Pancake Place. Dessert-wise you can get old favourites such as Apple Pie and chocolate fudge cake. For those with children under 12 there is a decent menu with a mix of pancakes, burgers and chips. The drinks menu is fairly extensive with a nice mix of hot and cold drinks and some alcoholic drinks in the evenings. I feel the prices are not too bad and are comparable to other coffee shops and bars in Dumfries.
I was fairly impressed with the service. We ordered two filled pancakes, an All Day breakfast, two Sprites and a white chocolate mocha. The waitress was pleasant and efficient. Unusually the food came before the drinks within a quarter of an hour of ordering.
The quality of the food is not bad at all. I can not remember having a bad meal in The Pancake Place. My All day breakfast consisted of two sausages, bacon, fried egg, grilled tomato, pancakes and a jug of maple syrup. The sausages looked a bit burnt but tasted fine. The pancakes were quite thick with a hint of sweetness. My companions felt that the pancakes were quite sweet for a savoury dish. The filling of the chicken and ham pancakes was creamy and full of large chunks of chicken breast but the ham was very scarce. My coffee was one of the specials and was full of cream. I am not sure I could taste the white chocolate but it was quite nice and at £1.75 it was fairly good value for money as I would have paid more in Starbucks. However I felt the soft drinks were as not good value for money as a regular lemonade in a 200 ml glass was £1.50.
One thing which could be improved is the positioning of the till. It is right opposite the front door and thus you have people queuing up for tables and to pay in a very confined place. I am sure the till could be better positioned or else you pay the waitress at the table.
One of the advantages of The Pancake Place is that it has decent opening hours. It is open until about 7 o’clock and my mum says it is just about the only place you can get a coffee after four o’clock on a Sunday.
Dumfries does have a wider range of eateries now. My advice would be try different options. However if you want tasty, rich pancakes or a good place to take your family for a treat I would recommend The Pancake Place. (I know this is in an Edinburgh category but this is a chain so the menu and prices are going to be the same.)
Advantages: none Disadvantages: expensive, bad food
I had been in the City of Dundee with my mum doing some shopping and I had my little baby boy with me who needed to be fed so we decided to go to The Pancake Place. Oh boy was that a big mistake. First of all we struggled to get through the door with the buggy and when we did get in and found someplace to sit there was no place to put the buggy, so we had to squash it up beside us. We looked at the menu to see what we were going to have and we were ... ...cheapest thing on the menu was a sandwich but because there was not a filing I liked I had to opt for a panini was ok course was a lot dearer. It then took us ages to get served from one of the waitresses; we finally managed to get our order in then it took ages for our meal to come. When it did eventually come my mum’s came first then about 5 minutes later mine came but it was the wrong thing so I had to wait again. My mum had a sandwich with came ...

Advantages: quick, friendly service, huge panckes, good vlue Disadvantages: Not much on main menu if you don't like pancakes
Pancakes should be simple to make since they are only flour, egg and milk right? Well I do like pancakes and not just on Shrove Tuesday but very rarely make them myself. When I fancy a fix I will go to a pancake house or creperie. I have fond memories of the PancakePlace in Scotland and the now sadly gone Dutch Pancake House in Manchester. Now I am in London I do not have to go without my pancake fix as I have discovered My Old Dutch Pancake House.
My Old Dutch Pancake House is a mini chain of Pancake Houses with branches in Holborn Central London, Ealing and Chelsea with a new one in Kensington recently opened. I've only visited the Holborn one but if the others are as good I would happily visit them if I was in the area. The Holborn branch is super easy to find, as it is located on High Holborn just two minutes walk from ...
Advantages: tasty, reasonable Disadvantages: exterior, a cracked plate, only in Manchester, limited menu if you do not like pancakes
Pancakes in this country seem to be very much a neglected food only eaten once a year on Shrove Tuesday. I have always loved them and have fond memories of the Scottish chain of restaurants the PancakePlace. My partner Duskman is a very fussy eater so eating out can be a nightmare, as he does not like anything too spicy. Thus there are only a handful of cuisines he will eat. Luckily when I am sick of Italian or good old pub food there is an alternative in Manchester; namely whopping great pancakes at decent prices from the Dutch Pancake house in Manchester?s City Centre.
The location of the restaurant is very accessible being on the corner of Oxford Street and St Peter?s Square, opposite the tram stop and Central Library and only a few minutes walk from Piccadilly Gardens.
I think one of the biggest problems with the restaurant is ...

, especially when Bil Krauss is performing- a must see. The staff were so friendly and they serve tasty chicken wings and snow crab every day and night.
There's a fantastic breakfast place and pancake house, open til 1pm every day, situated opposite the Breakers Resort and less than one block down the road. The name has slipped my mind, but it is definitely worth it for its hearty breakfast and Southern hospitality.
Broadway at the Beach is in the centre of Myrtle Beach and is a great entertainment complex, including shops, restaurants, bars, clubs and more. Take the time to feed the fish. It may sound like a simple thing but the sheer number of fish fighting for the food is hysterical. Children and big kids alike will be highly entertained. The cinema complex has cheap tickets for matinee shows of local films.
If you get a chance to catch ...
