I needed a hotel to stay in on the 5th July for going to see Iron Maiden at Twickenham stadium. I started looking around for hotels back in November 2007 and came across the website activehotels.com. I searched for hotels around the Twickenham area when this one, The Park Hotel came up in a place called Teddington which claimed it wasn't far away from the stadium.
The website had said that the Park Hotel is a 3* and owned by Folio Hotels. This is a grade 2 listed building and looked very nice from the photo's i'd seen. It has 43 large double rooms but some are adapted for families and disabled guests. It also mentioned it had a bar and restaurant so thought it sounded fine for my needs.
A double room was going to cost me £63, but had i booked the hotel through the companies website Folio Hotels i'd have paid £95 for the same room! So seeing this as a bargain i booked it. I didn't bother adding on breakfast as for £8.95 for a buffet or £12.95 for a full english i thought this sounded far too pricey.
I got an email confirmation come through pretty quickly after booking which had directions on the bottom for people driving. As i was going down by train i didn't need this part.
So last weekend i headed down to Twickenham and attempted to find the hotel. Coming out of Twickenham station the road signs pointed left to Teddington and just 2 miles away. I couldn't see any taxi's but there was a bus stop right outside the station so hopped on that. £2 for the fare and a trip of less than 15 mins and i arrived at the hotel.
I was greeted by friendly staff and the inside of the hotel looked very impressive. I was checked in very quickly and asked if i needed a newspaper or any cabs booking during my stay. I said i'd need a cab back to the stadium in around 10 minutes time. The receptionist called and booked one while i was there and then i headed upto my room.
The room itself was very spacious. I'm sure the bed must've been a king size as it seemed massive. The en suite was also very roomy and the whole room was decorated very nicely. It had tea/coffee/hot chocolate making facilities and biscuits in the room and the bathroom had little bottles of body lotion, shampoo and a bar of soap which was still wrapped. These little touches i always feel make the rooms more welcoming.
There was a menu in the rooms which seemed to have a very good choice and meals are served throughout the day. Prices seem a little expensive but that's normal for hotels.
The hotel was very clean and all staf i saw during my stay were friendly, polite and always smiling.
After unpacking i headed back down towards reception to await my cab and found fresh towels left outside my door for me. Upon arriving back in reception i was told the taxi wasn't here yet so i decided to make the most of the nice weather and wait outside in the sun. The hotel had a lovey area of tables and chairs and staff coming round to take orders for drinks. Half an hour had passed and still no taxi so decided to ask where it was. The receptionist called the company for me who said it hadn't been written down at the taxi firm so was never booked, she couldn't apologise to me enough and ordered another.
5 minutes later i was on my way back towards the stadium.
Upon returning back to the hotel i was so grateful for having such a comfy bed, and have to say this was the most comfortable hotel i've stayed in. Checking out was just as simple as checking in and there was yet more friendly staff on reception. Overall it was a lovely stay and i'd recommend this hotel.
---- Hotel location ---
The hotel is situated in a fairly quiet area of Teddington which is less than 5 mins walk to the nearest street for shops, bars and restaurants. It has it's own train station not far away and Twickenham station is just 2 miles dwon the road. There are 2 bus stops nearby which take you to various places and the fares seem to be around £2 no matter where you're going.
