Walking through the Pavs this afternoon for perhaps the millionth time in my life I finally realised what a dump this place really is. Built as part of the Bull Ring Vision of the 1960s it really hasn't jumped forward much in 30 odd years.
To access the Pavs is mainly done by a long rampway leading up from one of Brum's main high streets, New Street. But as soon as you walk up the ramp you can see the indoor styling for all its crumby beauty. All the shops are nothing more than pigeon-holes with no vivid colours or exotic window dressing to really allure the more discerning shopper.
And God, why do the owners of these places still think tacky muzak will improve matters for bored shoppers. It was liking walking through a time warp as soon as we entered this monolothic cavern of uniformity. Even more of a step backwards after enjoying the rest of the day in the more accessable & more interesting parts of the city centre.
All the usual names are here, MacDonalds, HMV, Woolworths blah blah blah. But no big names, no exciting labels just tat. And what makes this place even more of an embarrassment is that it also leads onto New Street train station, the central hub of commuter country. Not a pleasent site to alight from a train to be inveloped into a 60s architectual nightmare before finally escaping into the natural light of the city.
Its a pity this isn't demolished along with the main Bull Ring centre cus its certainly doing no one any favours.
