Having seen Phantom of the Opera in 2005 and been blown away by the whole production, my fiancé and I decided to treat ourselves to tickets to a performance over the 2006 Christmas period. At £45 a ticket for a matinée performance its not a cheap afternoon out but we knew, having seen it before, it would be worth it.
The performance was at Her Majesty's Theatre in the Haymarket area of London which is easily accessible by Tube, bus or on foot being adjacent to Leicester Square. Our seats were in the Royal Circle, row G whcih gave us an excellent view as we were quite high up but not too high.
For those not familiar with the story of Phantom of the Opera, it is set in Paris in the 1900s, were a ghost is apparently haunting an Opera House. The Phantom (is he a Phantom or is he a disfigured man?You will have to make up your own mind!) takes refuge in the basement of the Opera where he can hide fromt he worlds prying eyes. He comes out only at night to make music and tutor his protegée, Christine. When Christine falls in love with childhood friend Raul the Phantom is consumed by jealousy and wages war on the Opera House. The climax of the production is nail-bitingly tense- will raul manage to rescue Christine from a life with the Phantom?
Every aspect of the musical is breath taking, from the scenery and special effects to the rich costumes. Although the story may sound serious there are many comedic moments which had the audience laughing, as well as a few tense moments when we all jumped (although 2nd time around we knew what to expect!). the songs are all fantastic- you will recognise many as they are so famous though you may not have connected them with Phantom of the Opera. The voices of the performers are absolutely amazing- very strong, always in tune and the words very easy to understand. We found ourselves humming the tunes fromt he Musical for days afterwards they are so catchy!
To see Phantom of the Opera really is an experience I would highly recommend- it truly is unforgettable and we have recommended it to all our friends and family- although sadly i believe the show comes to an end in January 2007.

Advantages: A night of theatrical magic - immerse yourself. Disadvantages: None I can think of - the experience is worth the face value of the top priced seats.
