I have to confess to spending a lot of time in the PV as it is just over the road from where I work. It is situated on Upper North Street in Brighton and is just a few minutes walk away from the town centre. Yet because it is not on a main route it does not attract the lager louts. Nor does it attract locals, most people who live nearby have traditionally gone to the windmill which is further along the same street.
So who does drink there? Civil servants and now, following a recent takeover, members of Brighton's gay community.
It is a relatively small pub with a couple of sofas and a raised bit by a fire that can get too warm, especially as the windows don't open. Generally, even on a weekend, it is possible to find a seat here. The televisions have been removed. I like watching football but it's nice to be able to have a conversation without that distraction. I have listed it stylish under the descriptions below but it doesn't really fit any of them. I suspect the owners want it to be stylish or modern but it looks traditional and feels typical.
Drinks available include Carlsberg, Heineken, Strongbow and Harveys. Not the greatest selection but what you'd expect from a pub of this size. The bitter used to taste awful but you can tell the difference when good landlords, or landladys now, clean out the pipes. Carlsberg costs £2.50 for a pint which is about average for Brighton. There are no special offers at present.
The new team of friendly barstaff have attempted to rejuvenate the pub with the aid of Elvis, they will turn the music down or off if you ask them nicely. They have also reintroduced food despite having a very small kitchen. I have yet to sample this, hence the average rating, but there is at least one vegan option and the full menu is quite adventurous. Not sure about potato skins instead of chips though. A quiz now takes place on a Wednesday night but again I have yet to participate.
This is the sort of pub which you treat like your living-room for a good old-fashioned conversation with friends and it's the sort of pub I heartily endorse.
