Advantages: Wonderful surroundings Disadvantages: Expensive if you have to pay full price
...Hubby and I had a wonderful Christmas present from our daughter and her partner – a weekend in London and a show! WOW! Were we impressed! She had secretly liaised with my boss so that I could have a long weekend in London. So, on Friday 14 January, off we trotted to London!
She chose The Rembrandt Hotel which is situated in Knightsbridge, in fact, it is opposite the Natural History Museum/Victoria & Albert Museum. We did ’hum and ha’ a bit as to whether we should drive up or get the train. At first, the train seemed the better option as London is an absolute nightmare to drive around plus there is that dreaded congestion charge. But then I had a brilliant idea. The company I work for has a flat in the Sloane Avenue area (unfortunately only available to Board members) and it is situated only 3 minutes walking distance from the Rembrandt...

Advantages: Famous Art, free entry, peacful setting Disadvantages: Not well known
...Very worthwile a visit. Entry is free and it is close to Oxford street. The paintings are great and some of them are very famous, for instance Rembrandt (portrait of his son Titus), Frans Hals (Laughing Chevalier) and lots and lots of French 18th century (Watteau, Greuze, Boucher etc) Also interesting collection of antique armour and weapons. A hidden treasure in a peacful setting. If you are interested in French 18th art and culture go there and take your visitors there. Also because it is not very well known there are hardly any queues and the staff are friendly and happy to explain things...

Advantages: Excellent paintings in every room Disadvantages: Might be a little overpowering unless you're prepared
...Impressionists and post-Impressionists. Douanier Rousseau's "Tropical Storm With A Tiger", Renoir's "Les Parapluies" and Friedrich's "Winter Landscape" are always near the top of my list. At the same time I can't resist Gainsborough's "The Watering Place", a large early evening rural landscape which mentally transports you to another world should you be in central London on a hot summer afternoon. And I always spend a few minutes with the Dutch 17th-century rooms with pictures from Cuyp (especially his golden sunset meadows), Ruisdael, Vermeer and Rembrandt. I haven't said anything about the pre-Renaissance work, but let me recommend three favourites, Pisanello's tapestry-like "Vision of St Eustace", Uccello's magnificent "Battle of San Romano", and Van Eyck's exquisitely-detailed "Arnolfini Marriage". The micro gallery is worth a few minutes...
