Good Hotel for exploring Bristol

Advantages: Clean, comfy, modern
Disadvantages: Very expensive restarant and bar, rather sad swimming pool and gym

This hotel in in the centre of Bristol within waling distance of Temple Meads Station. If you know Bristol then you will know that this location then might mean convenience but it's not gorgeous - a lot of Bristol was bombed in the war and rebuilt in the 50s and 60s and it shows! The hotel itself is newer than that though, but when you arrive it does look a bit tired and in need of a facelift. Parking is available and not difficult, though like most city centre budget hotels you have to pay extra for it, but I thought the £3.50 a night quite a good rate. It seemed a secure car park. . I checked in swiftly and the receptionist was helpful and friendly. I paid £104 a night for two people for an executive double (i.e. one grade up from the standard one) over the internet before we went. The hotel has a lot of floors (we were ...

Clifton Arms Hotel

Advantages: The Best Hotel in Lytham St Annes.
Disadvantages: Whoa! is it pricey!

This Hotel is in the prime position in Lytham. It faces the 2 or so miles of Lytham Green. There are scenic views of the Welsh hills and the Pennines in the distance and views of the Ribble Estuary. Close by is the famous windmill. The hotel takes its name from the Clifton family. They were the main landowners in the area. There are many references to the Clifton family locally. Their family seat was Lytham Hall. This is open to the public on occasion. It is now owned by an insurance company. (AXA) The Clifton Arms Hotel was first erected on Clifton Street, in the space that is now Park Street, on or around 1794. This was apparently a coaching inn. Its successor, the current hotel, was built in 1840 on West Beach. In 1875 all buildings comprising the hotel were raised to the same height. Clearly the hotel was built at the height ...

Jarvis Hotel, Bristol

Advantages: Good leisure club,nice rooms
Disadvantages: Unfriendly staff

The Jarvis Hotel is a couple of miles north of Bristol in an area called Winterbourne. As a former country house built in the mid 19th century and with extensive grounds it has every going for it as a hotel. The Jarvis group have spent a lot of money refurbishing the place including an excellent Poolside leisure Club with swimming pool, spa, solarium and under-utilised exercise equipment. As is often the case the pool is a little small and you soon learn how a goldfish must feel swimming around the same extent of water only about 6 times your body length. The rooms in the old part of the hotel are quite spacious but you may find those in the newer part little better than a motorway lodge for size. They are clean and tidy and have the obligatory tea-making facilities. All rooms are en-suite. The bar is cramped but nearby is a huge ...
