I recently had a chance to stay at this rather lovely 4 star hotel in York. My husband is involved with a medical company and for their AGM this year they stayed at The Royal York with a meal at the nearby (if you call 40 minuets on a coach) Castle Howard. All very posh and normally way above my means of expense (for the general person attending this function think doctor, surgeon, well paid researcher), however as hubby does work for them they paid for most of the trip (we had to pay £26 in total, what a great deal!).
Arrival -------- The hotel is situated next to York train station and has a large car park so it’s convenient to drive too. The hotel is about 5 minuets walk away from the centre of York where there are loads of shops from the normal high street chains to antique and art shops.
You
are met at reception by the concierge, and it is at this point when you check into your room that you realise how old and big the building is. We actually arrived quite a bit earlier than check in time but we were informed that the concierge would be happy to take our bags and deliver them to our room later, I decided they may as well stay in the car, but had we travelled by train this would have been great. I checked back with reception about an hour before proper check in time and was given the card to enter my room and given instructions about breakfast, check out time and putting drinks/food onto the room card.
The car park costs £6 for the duration of your stay and they are happy for you to check out and still stay in the car park while you do your shopping.
Facilities ------------ There was a lovely big breakfast room, bar/restaurant, swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna steam room, and gym all of which could be used by people visiting the hotel. There were also plenty of meeting rooms (it was of course at AGM, not just a jolly!). All of the facilities were immaculately kept and the staff were more than happy to deal with any problems with a smile.
Breakfast – there was a huge choice and you were able to help yourself to full English, continental (croissants, Danish pastries), cereal, toast, pancakes, fresh fruit etc. You could have as much breakfast as you liked, and to be honest I was a pig and had some of everything so I can honestly say that everything was great!
Rooms ---------- Our room was disabled adapted, it had a large bathroom, tv with films on demand at extra cost, internet connection, comfortable bed, chairs, writing paper etc. It looked beautiful when we first entered and could have easily housed a small family with little problem.
The bed was comfortable and there were plenty of pillows and extra blankets should you need them. They also offered a turn down service to generally tidy your room and get it ready for bedtime for you, however we didn’t feel the need to check this service out!
Staff ------ All very smart at all times, with a posh looking uniform they were happy to help with any problems and not once did you see any of them messing about or overhear them talking about any of the other guests or what they had been up to at the weekend.
Although they were helpful they did seem slightly unapproachable at first due to being so efficient and smart, but they did check that everything was alright as you passed reception, and if you stood looking lost (I don’t follow instructions well and got lost on the way to the swimming pool!) they were more than happy to explain where you needed to go!
Checking out ------------------- Check out was from 11am-12noon although you could leave earlier if you wanted to, for £25 extra could stay til 6pm, I wish we had known this before we arrived as we would have organised our babysitter (Grandma) to have the kids for longer and stayed all day.
Price ------- The general price for a room is between £99 and £149, as I mentioned we didn't have to pay much as this was a perk of hubbies commitment to the company. Although it is expensive you definitely get what you pay for. We spent the previous night in a much cheaper hotel and the room was tiny in comparison, the bathroom dingy and the bed the most uncomfortable I have slept in for some time, with only 3 pillows to share between 2 of us, so I would say that sometimes the extra is worth spending.
However, unless we could get a cheap deal I can't imagine that we will be staying at this hotel again, or any other 4 star hotel for that matter. I am backing up my hubby with all his work for this company in the hope I can go to the AGM next year, I wonder what fantastic hotel we will get!?!
