Sheffield's Controversial Supertram!

Advantages: Fast, Cheap and Comfortable
Disadvantages: Does Not Serve The Whole City, Often Congested

Historically the City of Sheffield had an extensive Tram System that served the City from the late 1880's until 1960 when it was abolished. It had been perceived by the late 1950's that the future of travel in the City would be with Cars.

Twenty five years later and there were so many Cars on the Roads that the City's transport infrastructure was on the verge of complete collapse. Clearly something radical had to be done and a Government ...
...would once again lie in the hands of the Trams.

These new Trams would be a far cry from the old Victorian Trams that had once graced our streets, they would be fast, clean and environmentally friendly. Lessons could be learned from similar schemes in other UK Cities like Manchester and the latest technology available would make these Trams cutting edge.

And so the Supertrams as they were to be called were born.

Hassle free travel around Sheffield

Advantages: fast, reliable, safe, cheap, near everything
Disadvantages: some routes illogical and impactical.

The Sheffield Supertram:- The easiest way to the City Centre and Beyond... The Routes... There are 3 main routes to the Sheffield supertram, each are colour coded, so getting on the wrong tram is generally quite hard. The three routes are the yellow line: Meadowhall>City Centre>Hillsborough and Middlewood. The Purple Route: Meadowhall>City CentreCity Centre>Malin Bridge. The routes are quite complex, and ...
...areas and shopping centres to the city centre, therefore you can mostly get to where you need to be with ease. The Trams... The trams are always very clean and very comfortable, with the exception of rush hour when comfort is not heard of. Though some trams are old the trams are all in good condition with minimal damage, unlike trains and buses in the area. There are currently two main types of tram, one lot that are being refurbished and currently ...

Just a Nice Place*

Advantages: it's nice, reasonably calm, and generally a nice place to be.
Disadvantages: not really many

Sheffield is a large city, in South Yorkshire in southern northern England (if that makes sense). It is a large city and is in the five largest cities in the country. Getting There... Sheffield has wonderful transport links by bus and train with local bus services and coach services from up and down the coutry and trains to and from London and pretty much everywhere else in England. There is a lack of parking in sheffield and roads are very crowded so going by car is never a good idea though if you are wanting to get into the city centre then you can park at a park and ride and get the supertram to the city centre which is very convenient (see my review of the sheffield supertram system). The City Centre... The city centre of sheffield is in my opinion, one of England's best and is very clean, light and open and feels very safe ...

Review of Sheffield City, England (SZE)

Not so great for shoppers.

Advantages: Good for residents.
Disadvantages: Park and Ride expensive.

In 1994 a new method of transport was opened in Sheffield. This was the Supertram system. Costing over £200 million of government money this system was to revolutionise the public transport system in Sheffield. For the people of Sheffield I am sure the system has provided a fast and reliable service in and out of the City centre. On our many visits to Sheffield we have always been dismayed at the expensive cost of the car parks in the City so on our latest visit we decided to use the Park and Ride system using the trams. After leaving the M1 motorway we followed the signs for the Park and Ride site and were surprised to be within sight of the City centre before following the signs back away from the City to the car park. As we entered the car park we saw that the cost of the Park and Ride was £3. However, when we went to pay we ...

- Saturday from 8am - 8pm and cost 20p for 8 minutes, further away from the centre you get 12 minutes for this same price. For long stay parking the NCP car parks offer the best value for money. It is a light railway system covering 3 main routes which intersect the city centre and cover a distance of 29 kilometres of track. There are conductors on each tram who sell the tickets on board and there are a wide range of different ticket options available. These include:- Single Fares - These are ideal from one way ...
