...'s grave in the graveyard of St Chad's Church. To really experience the Dickensian atmosphere you must visit Wyle Cop. Dickens not only stayed here, he also wrote about it. As he looked out of his window at The Lion Hotel - you can still stay here - he described the scene as follows; "looking all downhill and slantwise at the crookedest black and white houses, all of many shapes except straight shapes."
Shrewsbury is full of black and white timber buildings and intriguing haunted alleys with curious names such as Grope Lane and Butcher Row. Visiting these winding streets and narrow alleys you will find one of the best collections of independent shops in the country. Advantages: Lovely old building with excellent rooms Disadvantages: possibly location is being used as a base for Shrewsbury
...made to order and is delicious. The menu for the evening meal looked impressive - although we ate in Shrewsbury so cannot really comment.
The bar is pretty good for a hotel, but on a wet autumn evening it was not enough to keep us there all evening. The only downside for us was the location - too far out of the city to walk, so got a taxi, and had a long wait for a taxi back. The quite location however will probably be perfect for others.
The other point of interest for the stay - was a fire in the middle of the night, so we were all out in the carpark at 3.00am! It was well organised however with free hot drinks and snacks provided, and we were soon back in our rooms. No lasting damage was done.
I got an excellent price deal due to a business relationship, it normally costs around £110-£125 for a double room b&b.

It is written by Al Smith, Mike Ashton and Danny Beath and edited by Fay Easton and Phil Northwood, published by the Shrewsbury Town Centre Management Partnership. If only all town centre management partnerships were as pro-active and as go ahead as Shrewsbury's!
For me, the book captures all the many different, somewhat mercurial moods and nuances that make up the medieval and paradoxically at the same time, modern town of Shrewsbury.
There's a young man enjoying a quiet pint in a smokey pub.
And facing the ethereal beauty of the Kingsland Bridge over the River Severn early one morning.
There are photographs which reflect the proud military history of Shrewsbury, yet these are juxtaposed...
