About twenty to thirty minutes from Downtown Vancouver is Jericho Beach. On the south shore of English Bay Jericho is supposedly famous for an endless sandy strip and swimming beach. Well as an Australian I have different ideas of what a swimming beach and an endless strip of sand is.. but Jericho Beach is cute and has a spectacular view of the mountains, though they are rather hard to miss in Vancouver.
On our first night arrival, time zone confused - I had been in Sydney, Wellington, Hong Kong and London in the preceding three weeks and my friend had done an epic journey from Sydney stopping for one night in Shanghai and one night in London - we had no idea where we were and as we wandered down to the beach we felt we had wandered onto a teenage summer movie set. The pool's nothing on that at The National - but who needs one ? The ocean's just acress the street ! Also, there's no restaurant, although they do serve a "continental" style breakfast in the lobby - or even on the verandah. There are also a hundered excellent eateries just a few blocks down Ocean Drive, so we didn't find the lack of a restaurant a problem at all.
There's also the AMAZING "Jerry's Famous Diner" just around the corner at 1450 Collins Avenue, everything you could ever want for breakfast, lunch and dinner !

The Sagamore is located in Miami's trendy SouthBeach area close to the beach, shops, bars and restaurants, however there are many hotels to choose from in this district.
This hotel was suggested to us by our travel agent for its great location and facilities but we were sceptical as it describes itself as an 'Art Hotel' - made me wonder whether the atmosphere would be stuffy and pretentious. On entering the hotel, art is very much in evidence with a selection of chairs and tables that look more like scuptures (some of which have notices telling you not to sit on them). However the reception staff were very welcoming. The elevator is a sight to behold, being lined with black alligator skin (real or fake) and minimal lighting - very 'Austin Powers'! We were impressed with our room even though there was no sea view, we were given a suite ...
