The Spinnaker Tower

Advantages: Amazing views and stunning coast line
Disadvantages: The lift journey, expensive prices in the Waterfront Bar and lack of toilets

On a Clear Day You Can See Forever - well, almost.

Advantages: Spectacular Views
Disadvantages: Could be expensive

I'll always remember the 12th October 2008 as a day of perfect weather - a cloudless blue sky, virtually no wind (southerly, 9mph), warm but not uncomfortably so. The suggestion to visit the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth seemed like a good one. I had been admiring its curvaceous shape for two years; it had been one of those instances where you often don't bother to visit the sights on your own doorstep, however appealing they may be. I don't want ...
...statistics, which are available on the Spinnaker Tower's own website or on Wikipedia, and in other reviews on this site. You can't really miss the tower, but for the unfamiliar it's in the south-west corner of Gunwharf Quays. Go down to the waterfront, turn right, and pass the restaurants. There it is. We had to queue for about ten minutes at 2.30pm on that beautiful autumnal Sunday afternoon. Plaques in the entrance hall show that The Spinnaker ...

The Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth

Advantages: Great views, modern design, brilliant attraction for a day out.
Disadvantages: Possibly the price if you aren't a resident.

Having moved to Portsmouth within the last year, it has become my home from home for an endless list of reasons. This beautiful coastal City draws in thousands of tourists, and looking around it is easy to see why. Well maintained, planted gardens. Open green spaces. Long stretches of pebble beach with views across the Solent to the Isle Of Wight. Boat rides! Historical Dockyards. Shopping, in new modern and fashionable shops. Restaurants. Bars! ...
...All of the latter features listed above make up the GunWharf Quays complex to the West of the Island. A great place both day and night. Like all large projects, Wembley Stadium, Bath Spa....Spinnaker Tower was rather late in opening. Originally planned for the Millenium, the tower was finally opened on the 18th of October 2005! Quite a lengthy build, that did not go without hitches! Original plans started in 1995, allowing residents to vote for ...

PANORAMIC OR PANIC, WORTH THE VISIT THOUGH.

Advantages: The views, the beauty of the building, surrounding area.
Disadvantages: A bit expensive, not easily accessable for the disabled or elderly.

...visit. We had already visited the Historic Dockyard of Portsmouth and gone around the HMS Victory (which I thoroughly recommend). And, as we were crossing over from Gosport to Portsmouth on the Ferry we couldn't fail to see the Spinnaker Tower looming above the skyline. Surely it was worth a look. The design of the building was very appropriate for the area. As I am sure you can see from the pictures that it represents a Sail of a ship. It looks ...
...next to it.) The Spinnaker Tower is situated in the Gunwharf Quays Shopping & Leisure Centre. The Gunwharf Quays has it's own multi-story car park. (I'm not sure on the prices for this Car Park as we arrived by Ferry.) You can easily get there by Bus, Ferry or walking from th main Town Centre from Portsmouth. It is about a 3 minute walk from the Ferry from Gosport and a 10 minute walk from the Historic Dockyard. Roughly about 3/4 of a mile from the ...

The Spinnaker Tower

Advantages: great views, family friendly, good value for money
Disadvantages: cafe at the bottom, photos too expensive

Information about the tower: Being a student at the University of Portsmouth for three years I was delighted when it was announced that the Spinnaker Tower was to be built in the up and coming Gunwarf Quays area. The tower officially opened in October 2005, offering 350 degree panoramic views of Portsmouth harbour and the Solent. It stands at 170 metres tall and on a clear day enables visitors to see for 23 miles. My experiences of it: I have twice ...
...for the south coast. From the bottom you take a fast express lift accompanied by a tour guide who tells you a few interesting facts about the tower and before you know it you are at viewing deck one over 100 metres above the harbour below; this deck features a glass floor which you can walk over. From here you can walk up 2 more flights of stairs to viewing decks two and three (the crows nest); this one is great because it's open to the elements ...

A Change from Chain Restaurants

Advantages: Freshly cooked food
Disadvantages: Not open in the evenings

and let us choose where we would like to sit. We headed towards the back where there were comfortable upholstered seats along the wall, with two tables to choose from. My only criticism of my experience here is that neither was completely clean, but it was nothing serious enough to put us off. We had a view through the floor-to-ceiling window of the Canalside, but we could have picked a table with wooden chairs and a view towards Portsmouth harbour and Spinnaker Tower had we wanted to. We looked at the menus and realised that they were lunch menus with no sign of the croissants that had caught our eye. I went to the bar and enquired if the breakfast menu was still on. The waitress kindly said that she would check with the chef and soon returned with the answer that it was but that there were only four rashers of bacon left. I told her that it ...

GGGooo Gosport Ferry

Advantages: Fast efficient service
Disadvantages: May be choppy in bad weather

~*~ Gosport Ferry Ltd ~*~ *** The Spirit of Portsmouth *** What is it? This is the Gosport to Portsmouth ferry service. The ferry leaves Gosport ferry port and travels across the sea to Portsmouth. On the Gosport side there's plenty of reasonable car parks within walking distance of the port. I am not very familiar with the surroundings of Gosport, so apologise for this. The Portsmouth side has the Spinnaker Tower and Gunwharf Quays within stones throw of the Portsmouth port. Tickets: We brought our tickets from a nearby kiosk on the Gosport side. We paid around £7.00 for two adults and two children. On the leaflet I took away with me from my 'cruise ship' there are no references to prices which is a bit disappointing. The Ferry: The ferry itself is green and white sort of stripped ...

Review of Gosport Ferry Ltd

The 'Sail' of the Century

Advantages: Beautifully designed
Disadvantages: Expensive Drinks, Potentially Rough Seas

Earlier in the year I had the pleasure of spending a couple of weeks on Royal Caribbean's 'MS Independence of the Seas' - a fifteen-thousand tonne cruise ship, upon which I traveled over 7,000 miles. A town at sea Having not been on a cruise before, I really didn't know what to expect, and was in for a shock when I saw the ship for the first time. The Independence is currently the largest passenger vessel ever built, measuring a massive 1,111.9ft. To put that immense scale into perspective, it's twice the length of the huge Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, and incredibly tall. Walking up to the ship is like walking up to a skyscraper - and there certainly weren't any surrounding buildings which could compete with its height in Southampton where I boarded. The Independence has a capacity for 4,370 passengers, which is quite ...
