The Public House & Restaurant ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Walking through the front door brings you into the main Bar area which is decorated with a mix of old and new. Leather couches and chairs as well as the traditional bar tables and stools make for a comfortable area to sit and relax and enjoy your drink. A large bar takes up the right hand side of the room with very helpful and polite staff there to serve you.
Walking through the bar brings you to the restaurant area with its polite and helpful staff who tell you which tables are available and how to go about ordering your meal if this is the first time you have visited.
The restaurant is very large and again decorated stylishly. A variety of shapes and sizes in tables mean that you can have a party of 2 or of 10. Everyone can be catered for. We always end up with a corner table so the grandsons are cornered and can not get into trouble lol.
Ordering your Food ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once you have your table, you take note of the table number (written on a Cutlery container on the table) and fo back into the bar area to the serving till. You are then served with your drinks and can order your food. You are given a ticket stating "1 Carvery Meal" per person ordered for. Children under 10 can have a children's portion for £3.25 or children's meal with a choice of Chicken Nuggets, Burger or Sausage for £2.95. This is a 2 course meal with either a starter of soup or dessert of Ice Cream. Each child is given a picture and small jar of crayons to keep them occupied until their meal arrives.
Right so now you have your tickets and are ready for your feast. Off you go to the Serving Bar where you will, no doubt, find Phillipe. There are other Chef's but Phillipe is the main one who serves you with your meat. Laid out under hot lights you will find Honey Roast Ham, Turkey and Roast Beef. Which meat should you have? Well here is the great thing - you can have all three if you really want. Yes there is no cutting back here. You get 1 generous slice per meat if you have all 3, 2 slices of each if you 2 meats and 3 slices if you have just one meat and all cut from the joint sitting on the trays. You are then handed your plate to carry on along to the unlimited choice of seasonal vegetables and potatoes. There is everything here that you need for a great meal - Carrots, Turnip, Cabbage, Cauliflower Cheese, and Peas as well as both boiled Potatoes and Roast Potatoes (done in the oven) There are Yorkshire Puddings and Stuffing Balls as well as other traditional trimmings. Once you have managed to get everything you want onto the plate, which are good sizes, you then walk around to the sauces table. Here you will find Gravy, Mint Sauce, HorseRadish Sauce, Cranberry Sauce and various dips.
Right now you have your mountain of food it is back to your table to start eating, knowing that you will not be able to move for at least an hour once you have finished it all - that is if you manage to get to the bottom of your plate!
The Extras ~~~~~~~~~
You can have a starter before the main meal and there is a choice of Soup of the Day (£1.75) Melon with Fruits of the Forest (£1.75), Crispy Mushrooms with Garlic Mayonnaise (£2.50), Chilli Chicken Dippers with sweet chilli dip (£2.75), Prawn Cocktail (£2.75) and Spicy Prawns with sweet chilli dip (£3.45).
We find we definitely do not need any starters before the main meal as you can have as much as you like. Nobody limits you to how much as you serve yourself with potatoes and vegetables - just ask my eldest son who loves his Yorkshire Puddings and can get through 6 (Yes you read that correctly!) as well as 3 kinds of meat and plenty of potatoes and veg.
There are Side Orders available of Garlic Bread (£1.25) Beer Battered Onion Rings (£1.45) or Bread and Butter (35p). Beverages include Pot of Tea, Fresh Coffee, Floater Coffee and Speciality Coffees ranging in price from £1.10 to £2.35
Desserts are quite traditional with Apple and Blackberry Pie with Custard (£1.75), Creamed Rice and Jam (£2.50), Treacle Sponge and custard (£2.75) Banana Split (£2.95) and of course the gorgeous, tasty Chocolate Fudge Ice Cream Sensation at £2.95 - Layers of Chocolate Ice Cream, Chocolate Chips, Fudge Ripple Chocolate Sauce, Brownie pieces and topped with fluffy whipped cream and wafers - Now that is definitely a dessert worth trying even though I have only managed that two or three times so far.
Our Opinion as a family ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In all the time we have been visiting this place (about 2 years) we have never had a compaint - The food is always hot and well cooked, the meat is always done just right and service is always impeccable. There is a rush hour which is between 12 noon and 1.30pm when most of the pensionable aged population of Blackpool visit (and who can blame them at that price!) so we tend to try and visit around 2 - 3pm so no one is disturbed if Grandsons decide they don't want to share their crayons and start to argue. This is definitely great value for money. If you ever visiting Blackpool and want a place that is relaxing and great for kids, just visit here. There is never any rush to get you out once you have finished eating. If you still want to stay and have another drink you can move into the Bar area and relax in one of their lovely leather settees. You have to give this place a try just to see what value really is.
Additional Information ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have just added this after reading a comment by COOOEEE. She mentioned Disabled facilites such as toilets and ramps. There is an access ramp at the front of the building and a ramp at the rear of the building through which you can enter the building through one of the wide Fire Doors. There is also a disabled toilet in the restaurant area.

THE SQUIRREL PUB AND CARVERY, BLACKPOOL
The Squirrel is a very popular pub restaurant on Bispham Road in Blackpool. To get to the pub by car you leave the M55 motorway at junction three and follow the A583 road towards Blackpool Town Centre. The A587 is on the right as you go into town and you need to turn right towards the zoo, and you can follow brown elephant signs until you get to Stanley Park. Once near the zoo follow the A587 past Blackpool ... ...passing B and Q on the right. There is ample car parking once you are at The Squirrel. The pub is about half a mile north of Layton Railway Station which is on the Blackpool North Line. The best bus route to get there from Blackpool Town Centre is route number 11. The Squirrel is owned by Mitchells and Butler and I believe their Pub and Carvery Brand has proved to be great value for money. In fact a lot of people in Blackpool must agree with me as ...

Advantages: Great food, good prices and a friendly atmosphere. Disadvantages: Sharing the disabled toilets with the baby changing, the queues and the pub part of the squirrel.
Why Go To The Squirrel?
My husband and I love to go to The Squirrel pub for a meal. We tend to go there on a Sunday for lunch once a month. I would definitely recommend the pub for it's carvery's although I don't particularly like the pub side to it there never seems any space to sit down. The carvery is in a different room where there are tables and chairs to sit at. There is a new system now that means you have to pay for your meal before you ... ...to the chef's at the carvery. The pub has had to do this because they had people who ate and never paid for their meal. If you want to open a bar tab then you can do, but you must hand them your credit card or debit card which they will then swipe and hand back to you. This means that you can pay at the end of your meal and also for any drinks you order. You can also pay by credit or debit card at the time you order or you can pay by cash.

Advantages: cheap Disadvantages: rude arrogent argumentative staff not child friendly
...regular. On my last visit the waitress treated myself and my family in a way we have never been treated before. On every visit I feed my 1 year old son some of my meal as he only has a tiny amount. I had been refused a bowl previously but told I can bring my own. On this night the waitress's were looking at me, one said to the other watch her she wil bring a bowl. I mentioned to my husband since entering one waitress in particular hadn't taken her ... ...bag. Like a charging bull the waitress comes to our table and yells at us saying we cant feed our baby unless we buy a meal for him (0.25p cheaper than an adults meal) I asked her why when it was fine before and told her he only has half a potatoe a tiny bit of veg and an inch of meat. She then wouldn't stop arguing without us even speaking to her . I had to keep telling her I have heard enough, leave us to eat please. The other waitress came and ...

...children to this carvery as the staff are v. rude. I asked for a small plate for my child so I could give her some of my dinner. the response I received was horrifing. "WE DONT GIVE OUT SMALL PLATES YOU NEED TO BUY A VOUCHER" I have been going this a eaterie for the past ten yrs and never had a problem. The manager never came to see me as I was asked did I want to see the manager, which I agreed to. He just phoned the police. I was accussed of assault and asked to leave the premises. My children were very upset and I will be taking this matter further with the chain. All in all the police were phoned because staff at the squirrel made up a story about myself to their management. Apparently I assaulted a member of staff in ...

I have eaten the delicious Roasts here for the last ten years and have never had to make a complaint. I am in the catering industry myself and give the team top marks for service, food and value for money. No, it is not fine dining, but it provides what it says on the tin! A carvery.
What I want to know is why the writer of the review with the young child should not understand that what they were doing was theft! And encouraging the child ... ...3 year old and he eats as much as the adults! I would never dream of not paying for him. They provide high chairs for younger children too,
To the above critics I would say dont go to the Squirrels again looking for free meals - try the Salvation Army! ...
