I stumbled across this pub by mistake really! My husband and I were driving the'scenic' route between kendal and windermere and we stumbled across this pub so thought we'd give it a go seeing as we were hungry.
On first impressions it looked good as the car park was full and the bar area was bustling. We had to wait a while for a table despite it being a Thursday night!
Staff were very polite and accommodating, they soon found us a table and presented us with a menu.
The menu was quite small really, there weren't many options but there was a good variety of meats including; game pie, salmon, chicken supreme etc. The specials board had a good choice though which made the main menu a bit better. The starters were great with a good variety instead of offering the usual things there were some different choices like deep fried cheeses and hummus too.
The food tasted delicious. It was all so very fresh and tasty. You could tell that it had been prepared from fresh and was all homemade and not frozen.
I had a vegetable crumble for main which was absoloutely lovely. It was full of different vegetables and had a very light crumble on top which wasn't too stodgy.
All main meals came with homemade chips and seasonal vegetables. There was more than enough, we couldn't eat it all!
Desserts were varied with homemade choices and ones which weren't. We found ourselves not knwing which one to go for as they all sounded so good! I had the lemon meringue pie which was mouth watering it was the best I've ever had.
Price wise this pub is expensive with main meals costing from £9-16 but they are worth it as they are so very tasty. Drinks were also expensive but I think you get what you pay for.
The pub itself is very old with dark beams and small windows. It is very cosy but probably not great if you're claustraphobic as it is very cramped in appearance. It certainly did seem small but at the same time I did have enough room around me I think it was just the dark beams and the dark carpet!
The pub was very clean and staff were so very helpful. They brought us a basket of bread when we first sat down and were more than willing to keep a check on how we were and ask if we needed more drinks without it being pestering us.
I have since returned to this pub and will be doing again. It is a fantastic little find and extremely popular so I advise if you are going you should book! It is situated on the Crook road between Kendal and Windermere.
