One of the greatest attractions that London has is the River Thames.including the highly impressive Thames Barrier in the east of the river.

Long ago the Romans recognised the great importance of the Thames and as Britain became the leading industrial and commercial nation in the world this fine river played a very important role. The produce from numerous countries around the world was transported along the Thames to the London docks and equally produce from the"workshop of the World" found its way to many different parts of the world.
Despite the decline of the docks at long last planners have realised the great potential for urban regeneration that could be realised through the refurbishment of the Docklands. Some very imaginative and quality developments have taken place in the docklands, including good housing, vibrant commercial and recreational developments and the construction of London City airport.
The transportation infrastructure has been improved with the London Docklands railway and the Jubilee Line extension and on the South Bank of the river,a cultural renaissance has taken place. Particularly noteworthy has been the development of the Globe Theatre and the Tate Modern.
Increasingly too the Thames has been cleaned up and is arguably among the cleanest rivers in any of the urban areas of Western Europe. Salmon and other fish species have returned to dear old Father Thames.
There is now, thank goodness, renewed emphasis on the Thames as a means of transport and many tourists enjoy a river trip along this great river. Such a trip reveals some sights that even many Londoners are not always aware of including some wonderful old warehouses and other riverside commercial buildings.
A lot of fine bridges span the Thames and among my favourites are Tower Bridge, Chelsea Bridge, Waterloo Bridge and Westminster Bridge. The views from some of these bridges can be very interesting and I think again the bridge architecture in London is highly impressive.
Another aspect of the river are the splendid riverside pubs from places such as Greenwich,Limehouse,Chiswick, Putney and Rotherhithe. A visit to the likes of the Cutty Sark at Greenwich,The Waterman's Arms,The Dickens Inn, or the Dove, can be a thoroughly enjoyable experience. You can also watch the annual boat race between Oxford and Cambridge on the Thames.
Old Father Thames is an integral part of London and adds so much of an extra dimension to this great city.
Advantages: saves London from flooding Disadvantages: looks quite ugly
I first saw the Thames Barrier when I was taken on a pleasure boat trip up the River Thames as a young lad by my parents, I remember being intrigued by it and began quizzing my father all about which I'm sure he was delighted with! The Thames Barrier is a flood control measure spanning the width of the river. Apparently it has been used over one hundred times and as recently as March of last year. When looking at the barrier it is quite impressive ... ...it has been built the river is over five hundred yards wide. The barrier covers this complete section and breaks the river into four different sections, each approximately two hundred feet in length. When looking at the barrier above sea-level it doesn't appear to be a barrier at all, just four Sydney opera house shaped structures spanning the river. Most of the barrier is actually underwater. These can be raised using hydraulic winches which raise ...

Advantages: Small and compact with plenty of interest. Disadvantages: A bit out of the way
...do on a trip to the city why not take a boat ride from Westminster to the Thames Barrier. The trip down the river alone is worth it as it gives a great view of many famous waterside landmarks and you usually get an impromptu talk from the pilot. The barrier itself has an interesting museum attached, not large but very well thought out with a highly informative film and numerous static displays. If your kids get bored walking around large museums ...

The hotel is next door to station. Hotel is in Zone 2 of the underground so still cheaper to buy 1 day railcard covering zone 1 and 2.

Getting to the O2
Thames Clippers goes to most of the piers mentioned above, but they also offer a service to the O2 which is a great option if the tube journey is too long for you and you want to arrive in style! You could take in the Tutankhamun exhibition at the O2, if you've remembered to book in advance. Otherwise, if you hop on the tube for one stop you can get across the river to the massive ExCel exhibition centre, which is hosting the International British Motor Show at the end of July this year.
