As a regular visitor to this area on my trips to the nearby Redmires Reservoirs and surrounding Moorlands this is a place that I have passed many times, yet I seldom ventured through its door. One such occasion when I did visit here recently I had a meal with a few friends and a thoroughly good day out was had by all.
The Three Merry Lads is a Pub that has lots of charm and character. This stone built building began its life back in 1810 when it was a farm building, known as White Low. White Low was owned by the Marsden family, who had three sons. These sons were known locally as the three merry lads.
In 1833 a disused cow shed was renovated and a beer licence was granted and this cow shed was given the name the Three Merry Lads. This was around the same time that the nearby Redmires Reservoirs were being constructed and several Public Houses opened in this area to take advantage of the trade of the thirsty workers.
When the construction of the Reservoirs was completed in 1854 trade will have dropped off and it was not to flourish again until 1914 when an Army training camp opened up across the road to train soldiers for the trenches.
Again when the Army camp was abandoned in 1918 after the end of the first world war the trade will have dropped off and it would not flourish again until the 1930's when a road was built to provide access to the Moors above Sheffield for a generation of wealthy motor vehicle owners.
The Pub that we see today has been extended to more than double its original size and in recent years this place has transformed itself more from that of a Public House to a Restaurant.
The outer appearance of the Three Merry Lads is similar to that of a large traditional stone built country cottage and the interior continues this theme. It has a large spacious open plan room which receives plenty of natural daylight and the tables are spaced far enough apart so as to not give a cluttered appearance.
Against the wall in the middle of the room there is a real log burning fire which compliments the dark oak decor perfectly.
The menu is a lot more extensive than a lot of places that I eaten at but the emphasis is certainly on homemade cooking. On the downside the food prices are not particularly cheap but the food was delicious and well worth paying a little extra for.
The starters begin at around £4 rising to £7 and the main courses started at £7.50 rising to around £18. I had a mixed grill that cost £11.95 and came on a huge plate that included a full selection of different meats including pork and lamb.
A large area of this Pub has now been set aside for food, and food is served at both lunchtimes and during the evenings. There is however still a small area of the building that is set out like a traditional Pub and here there is a good selection of drinks available. These include hand pulled Tetley Bitter as well as standard and premium Lagers. There is also a very good selection of Wine available.
I was impressed with my recent visit to the Three Merry Lads but the food prices were a little bit higher than I would like to pay on a regular basis. There is no denying however that the food was cooked to perfection and well worth the wait.
The view from the window is stunning and is amongst the finest that you will find anywhere around here and there is a large beer garden outside where you can also eat if the weather is fine. At the side of this area there is a large children's play area and at the back an extensive grassy area where kids (and adults) can kick a football around.

Monday to Friday - 11.30am until 5pm Saturday - 11.30am until 11pm Sunday - Noon until 10.30pm
The Three Merry Lads is served regularly by the number 51 bus which leaves the City Centre every 10 minutes Mondays to Friday and every 20 minutes on a Sunday. This bus however terminates at the former Lodge Moor Hospital and the Pub is a five minute walk from here further along the road.
