WOW!
We discovered this paradise for tortoises in a brochure at the campsite (Tregarton Park) we visited in May and as my 7 year old son has developed a love of tortoises from his teacher we took him to see them as a birthday treat. Entry is by donation at the suggested rate of £2.50 per Adult and £1.50 per child (I am not sure what the concessions were though) which goes on the care and upkeep of the hundreds of 'Living Dinosaurs' that are rescued or bred here. On entry we were welcomed by Joy and Geoff who own and run the sanctuary and given a brief talk about the facilities which have been set up to cater for everyone no matter what age or infirmity you are. The garden has some open pens which are used in the warm days and glass houses where the tortoises can choose to live in doors or out depending on temperature and weather and with over 200 to see you wil not get bored because there are lots ofinformation sheets and leaflets to read / take away with you to learn from. My son was given the chance to hold one of the youngest tortoises there when Joy heard it was his birthday treat which probably just made his birthday/holiday justperfect in every way as he was speechless!!( an unknown thing for him normally!). There is a huge variety of breed and size from toddlers to Oap's and from common breeds to giant breeds all of which have brilliant info near them about their life, likes and dislikes, habitat preferences. You are welcome to picnic in the garden or in the picnic ares there are a variety of tables/seats, also there is a shop in a shed which is like an Aladdins cave as it stocked so much tortoise themed goodies also you can sponsor a tortoise so that you get regular newsletters and photos of it.
All in all I cannot recommend this tourist attraction enough as everything is set out to help you enjoy and learn whilst running the sanctuary as well for more information visit their website on www.thetortoisegarden.co.uk and if you are living near or are on holiday It is well worth a visit because you might be lucky like my kids were and see the next generation being laid! (A rare occurane apparrently!).
It is even a place that welcomes dogs on their lead
