I first visited Egypt last summer (2005) with my partner. We chose to stay in the Hurghada resort for two weeks in june. on the coast the temperature was between 30-35oc.
We were planning on spending two nights in cairo looking at the pyraminds however we spoke to our tour guide who reccommended a five hour coach journey to Luxor instead. Our first reaction was to dismiss it as five hours each way is a very long day in the summer heat but our guide was very enthusiatic about Luxor and in particular Valley of the kings so we gave it a go.
Our morning call was at 4am but suprisingly the journey did not seem that longand in fact I found it really interesting after travelling through the desert we drove along the Nile and through villages where children and their parents were working or playing in the fields or waving estacically at the bus going passed.
We arrived at the Valley of the kings around 10am where the area was already packed with tourists however it was not too busy enough for us to feel crowded or unforfortable. We payed our enterance fare and 7 Eyptian pounds extra to see Tutenkhamun's tomb (which I would deffinately reccommend doing as once you enter you cant change your mind)
In total we saw 5 tombs all of which were completely different but all as amazing as others, the colours and pictures on the walls have to be seen. No camera's are allowed in the tombs however we soon found out that the 'tomb keepers' will undoubtably grab your camera and take pictures inside the tombs for you for a small fee, we managed to get quite a few unplanned great pictures this way.
King tut's tomb is one of the smallest of the tombs but is a must! in my opinion if you get as far as the Valley of the Kings it would be such a waste not to see his tomb. I would also reccommend you take a lot of bottled water with you, by miday the temperature had reached 50 0c and there is nowhere to buy water whilst there and falt shoes are deffinately the best choice as a lot of steep slopes and stairs are present to get in and out of each tomb.
For adults i was deffintely reccommend visting Valley of the Kings but for children I think it might be a bit too long of a day for them to keep interested. The children who were there during our visit became quite figity and bored within the first hour, I imagine because of the heat therefore maybe visiting during may or september would be a better idea than during the hot summer.
Advantages: Really interesting, like nothing I have ever seen before Disadvantages: Too hot!!
One of the places we visited in during our stay in Luxor was the Valley of the Kings and Queens on the west bank. We had got prices from many of the different travel agents (most quoted around Ģ19pp). We were talking to a guy in our hotel who was selling balloon trips and he told us that his friend did private tours for Ģ25pp (these prices included transport, tour guide and enterance into the attractions). Although it was slightly more expensive ... ...probably half an hour at the most but time went by very quickly as the tour guide was telling us alot of interesting facts and all about history of the place. The first place we went to was the valley of the kings. We were given 3 tickets which ment we could enter 3 tombs. If we wanted to go inside anymore then we would have to pay extra and to enter Tutenkhamun's tomb was another Ģ7 (we decided to give this a miss as other epople who had went inside ...

Salaam, hi and hello!
When we were in Luxor in Upper Egypt 28 years ago, we crossed the Nile by ferryboat to get to the West bank (called Thebes by the ancient Greeks) from where a bus took us to the Valley of the Kings. This isnīt done any more, a bridge was built 7 km downstream 10 years ago and now itīs a bus ride all the way.
A bridge, what else is new? Luxor had 30 000 inhabitants when we were there in 1975, now it has 350 000. (Later in Cairo, a man told us that Luxor was a mere village; seen from Africaīs biggest city with an assumed population of 18 to 20 million [nobody knows the precise number] this statement canīt surprise) We passed some (real) villages, saw children on their way to school (10 years are obligatory, nearly all children do go to school according to our Egyptian guide), in the canal taking water from ...
Advantages: a real piece of history Disadvantages: not much there except the tombs
We went to the Valley of the kings whilst on a day trip to Luxor. On entering the valley of the kings i was surprised to see that there were just rocks and hills and some passages leading into the tombs, i had i suppose expected there to be perhaps a museum walkthough or more information about the valley of the kings.
We had a guide and i think it is best to go as a part of a day trip as our guide told us which were the best tombs to go in. We went in the tombs of Rameses 1st, 3rd and 6th. We didn't go into the tomb of Tutan Kharmon as there is nothing in there and yet this is probably the most famous of the tombs. All of Tutankhamun's finds were in the museum at Cairo.
You can pay for 3 tombs and we found this the best option which was 55 L.E.(Ģ5.50) As i say i would always recommend going on an organised trip with a guide. Ours was ...
